Bohemian Braid
Francita says:
"My Mom made this every Christmas Morning."
Estimated Cooking Time: 3 hours
Measure into large bowl ¼ cup warm water (90-110 degrees). Add stirring to dissolve 1 package active dry yeast.
Stir in ¾ cup lukewarm milk
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
¼ cup soft shortening
1 tsp grated lemon grind
1/8 tsp mace
½ cup raisins
½ cup chopped nuts
3 to 3.5 cups BREAD flour, mix in only half at first.
Mix with spoon until smooth. Add remaining flour to handle easily; mix by hand, kneading until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl covered in a warm area to rise for 1 to 1.5 hour. Punch down and knead. Split into 4 equal parts, roll out 3 parts to 14 “ long and braid loosely. Split the last remaining part into 3 parts, roll out to 12” long and braid together and place on top of the larger braid, tucking ends under for a clean look. Place on cookie sheet and let rise for another hour. Bake at 350 for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
Drizzle Icing: Add powdered sugar and milk together, with a tad of vanilla flavoring. Milk is absorbed very quickly into powder sugar so add 1 tablespoon at a time. Mix. Drizzle over braid. Serve warm.
