As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, we sat down this week with Terry Cohen, owner of Kingwood Laundromat.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
Kingwood Laundromat has made many changes and convenience upgrades to create ways for families
and professionals to free up more time in their busy schedules. Kingwood Laundromat is a full-service
laundry facility with an on-site wash/dry/fold drop-off service and new concierge pick up and delivery
service. We’ve served the local community for more than 30 years and are conveniently located on Loop
494 next to U-Haul.
For those using wash and dry self-service, we’ve added a mobile app (PayRange) to most of our washers and dryers allowing the customer to use their phones and own debit/credit forms of payment, so there is no need of quarters. We have 35 high-capacity washers and 29 large dryers, including washers that hold 4 loads (40 pounds) and 6 loads (60 pounds) of laundry. We feature free Wi-Fi, TVs, and snack and drink machines.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
My husband Bud and I purchased the laundromat in 2018 to allow me to work locally as our daughter finished school. The investment went from a monetary endeavor to one of the heart. As the owners, we are invested in the Kingwood community and saw ways we could help during times of crisis such as post-Hurricane Harvey, Tropical Storm Imelda and the Big Freeze of 2021. Families had a welcoming place to go to manage laundry tasks during a time that their homes were compromised by extensive damage and floodwaters.

Bud is an engineer by trade, but you can find him at the “mat” helping to maintain the facility and machines to keep them working for our customers. He’s helped push out our new services to make doing laundry as simple and mainstream as ordering groceries online. Once you’ve had us wash your clothes, you will be hooked!

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
There are other laundromats in the area but none are as clean, well equipped, maintained and well staffed as ours. Our team is friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We have several clients who are in wheelchairs and they find our facility easy to navigate and our staff approachable when help is needed.

We also are a member of the Little Free Library organization, a non-profit and the world’s largest book-
sharing movement. Patrons and children can find great things to read here 24/7. Their motto is “Take a
Book, Return a Book”. We love the concept!

What is your favorite part of running this business?
We get to give back. We’ve teamed up with Family Promise, the Humane Society and families devastated by COVID – to wash at a time when there was no way or lacking dependable resources. We see our customers as family. We are pet-friendly and welcome patrons with service dogs. We have our own grassy area with a picnic table available for pets and guests.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Our ideal client is anyone who needs more time in their schedule, is overwhelmed with household
chores, needs to get a lot of laundry done quickly or just wants someone to take over the task
completely. Seniors with health challenges love our drop-off service (and curbside assistance). The
convenience of pick-up and delivery is a game-changer that we know local families will want to use. We
deliver your clothes washed, dried and neatly folded and packaged in plastic bags. We’ll hang your work
clothes—just tell us which clothes need special attention. We have complimentary laundry bags for
customers who use the new pick-up and delivery service. When we make a delivery, most ask, “where
have you been all my life” with a dreamy, relaxed look on their faces. That’s how laundry should be
done!

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
Although our current machines are super efficient and fast, we plan to purchase newer, more energy efficient equipment and additional large capacity machines toward the end of this year. We’d also like to
see our pick-up and delivery business grow to serving an expanded area, as well as offering commercial business laundry services.
We want to make doing laundry a fun task and not a dirty chore. Whether that’s helping our DIY customers figure out the best machines and the fastest way to get mountains of laundry done in a
friendly environment or offering them our 4-Minute Laundry Service – 2 minutes to drop it off and 2 minutes to pick it up! Or the ultimate convenience–you can stay home and give our pick-up and delivery service a try by going to our mobile-friendly website KingwoodLaundromat.com and clicking the
“Schedule A Pick-up” tab.
