As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with the Bennett family, owners of Kingwood Fertilizing - Father and Son Team and Kingwood’s Organic Journey One Grass Blade at a Time.

Tell us a bit about your business: We create beautiful, healthy, organic yards without all the dangerous chemicals! Once upon a  time, we used pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers - just like everyone else. Those were great and all, until we learned how awful they were for us and our environment. Now, we won’t go near the stuff! Instead we concentrate on feeding the soils, by applying an organic biological granular and foliar spray to lawns, shrubs, and trees. We’re creating beautiful healthy, green lawns with fewer weeds, less disease, and fewer insects - all without harmful chemicals.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business? To put it simply, our services help keep families, children, and  pets safe. We’re a family-owned, father and son team who is really proud to be offering an all-organic alternative to  conventional fertilizers. We keep absolutely no dangerous chemicals on board our truck or spray rig. It feels so good to go into a client’s yard, apply our product, and know that they’ll have a beautiful lawn that we don’t have to worry about them walking on after we leave. We’re applying beneficial ingredients to make a healthy soil for a healthy yard, and we’re proud of that!

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started? Our family has been serving Kingwood with quality lawn care for over 25 years. We’ve always been drawn to the “green industry”, even more so in recent years with the way the world is changing. After my son and I watched the film “Kiss the Ground” on Netflix, he looked at me and said, “Let’s do this!” Thus began a year-long  journey of learning more and more about organic lawn products, meeting with companies experienced in natural, organic lawn care, and even  studying with a mentor.

We learned that organic lawn care is so different from the synthetic chemicals we all have learned to use, and that it’s actually really harmful to people, pets, and the environment as a whole. So we stopped treating problems with nasty chemicals, and  started focusing on nourishing the soil through organic methods. The results were amazing, and most importantly SO much healthier. Our wonderful family and friends let us “experiment” on their yards, and it’s been fantastic to have so many of them joining the organic lawn care journey with us! Our business was truly built on word-of-mouth, and we’re so grateful for our growing base of happy clients who are in  love with having a healthy beautiful yard while keeping our community safe.

What is your favorite part of running this business? Hands down, no question, working with my family is the greatest thing about running this business. Heading out in the day with my son, working together in this great community we live in, meeting awesome new people, and contributing to a  healthier environment makes for a really great day. We love educating others on organic lawn care, too. Recently a client’s neighbor came outside while we were spraying their yard, and she was upset because we were spraying right next to her yard. She was worried that the chemicals would harm her dogs. Once we told her that we were not using chemicals and that it was all beneficial organic matter we were using, she ended up thanking us and asked us for our card. That kind of thing is so rewarding. We really love making people happy.

Who is your target market or ideal customer? If you want a beautiful yard, but you're concerned about what’s going on your lawn, you’re our  ideal client. If you want your yard to look great, but still be able to let your kids and dogs run free without worry, we’d love to come talk to you. Most of the clients that have us at one time had chemically treated yards and were not happy with the way things looked and decide to  call us. We have learned that treating weeds, disease, and insects with chemicals can stop the issue, however the following year people are usually conquering more of an issue. Do you ever notice that your yard has more weeds and disease than the previous year? It’s because  we are harming our soil and so yards are producing more issues. With organics, we are feeding the soil to give it the best defense against these issues. As seasons change, you’ll see the weeds reduced and get choked out naturally along with reduced disease. You also won’t have to worry when your dog decides to eat the grass, they will not be ingesting nasty chemicals that could have a long term effect. It’s always nice to see a beautiful yard thrive, free of harmful chemicals that aren’t actually helping, just harming.

Chemical Fertilizers kills all life in the soil, including the good guys, Organics promote life in the soil.

Are there any special promotions you would like to mention? We sure do! As a first-time client, you’ll receive 50% off our monthly fertilizing if you mention seeing us on Kingwood.com. If you refer a friend and they sign up for  services, we’ll give you half off your next monthly application!
We appreciate your business!

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? We’re big on family, and so passionate and excited about this journey  we’re on. We’re compassionate, trustworthy, and our love for this work is apparent in all we do! We absolutely love making people’s outdoor  living spaces beautiful, safe environments to enjoy with those they love. I’m so grateful to start this company with my son, a 3rd generation lawn business owner here in Kingwood. My youngest son is already eager to join us when he is old enough to work! He is only 11, and has already been a big part of our advertising-he’s the one who picked out our logo for our truck! He’s excited just like we are and understands why we’re taking this organic journey for the betterment of our own yard, and for our environment as a whole. He’s also so creative in coming up with analogies about organic fertilizing. “Our customers should look at organic fertilizing as eating healthy and working out in the gym, and synthetic fertilizers like taking steroids. There are people who take steroids to get fast results, however in  the long run you are hurting your body. Just like people who use synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to get green grass are hurting their soil and environment around them..” He’s definitely picked up a lot from our dinner-table conversations!

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years? I’m excited to see our Kingwood community sway more and more toward the organic side with us. I know first hand how hard it is to see a weed and want to spray it with pesticides, or spray that brown patch in your yard with fungicide. But in reality, it’s just not the safe nor healthy lawn route. We’re so thankful we have found better ways with changing times. It’s not about quick fixes, it’s about healthy, long-term solutions that will allow you to actually enjoy your yard for all that it can be!
