Texasdad :
Abot 20% of employees in the US work for employers that offer employer-sponsored health insurance. Some don't qualify for it, so only 75% actually get it.
You have been lucky. Congratulations.
The fact is that the retail and hospitality industry quite often don't get health Insurance. You probably benefited from benefits historically negotiated by unions.
In any case, consider yourself fortunate
The current trend is to shift a grater share to the worker.

Rapsalot : Thank you for that information. Yes I always worked for major corporations at high levels. All employees had health insurance, dental vision, 401k with company match. So maybe I don't know about all the other people. We always hired people, offered them full benefits for not much Even Part timers at Fedex when I was a young man. People should try to work for major corporations maybe, I realize that is not for everyone. However they all have regular low skill and high skill jobs, like handlers, truck loaders to airline pilots etc. and will train people for better jobs as well if they want too. Cool type careers to have for everyone. Lots of corporations around, Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco. United, Southwest, Old Dominion and other logistics type companies. Also the City of Houston and Texas DOT and other State jobs.

I worked with FedEx people.
Went to Memphis often to work with their staff
Despite the efforts to avoid them, lots of injuries for the people lloading and handling stuff because speed pushes bodies and minds to the limit. Injuries s due to repetitive use of joints and stooping were the most common. I thought the all day pace was the problem. AC joint and wrist injuries were really common.Mental and physical fatigue combined in a setting with moving machinery are a toxic mix.machinery Amazon and UPS. It is the nature of the beast. Self insured workers comp, right? The peak season gig workers do not get the health insurance right? I don't remember the answer to those questions.

Texasdad :
I totally agree with you. People should try to find jobs with benefits, my daddy told me very early go work with oil and gas. Of course I listened to him. Boy it was a great gig. I don't consider myself lucky. I started as a contractor and was offered a job in 6 days. When there is a will there is a way.

Rapsalot :
I remember when my son first had to go to a mental hospital. I kid you not when I say he was in there a week and the bill was 30k. Yeah I had insurance, so very glad of that but my savings could have paid it. Mental illness is very expensive. Yeah I liked a lot of things about Reagan but not this decision.

#msg6024457Now 2/3 of Americans support Universal Care. Is this a response to the inadequate health care they are receiving now?

pickme2 : This tells you how bad Obama care was. It was promised to be the end of the rainbow, and it turned out to be a dirt pit.

Donnawisdom :
Hopefully only 1 hospitalization has been required.
Texas has a mental health care crisis . It is not rare for there to be multiple required, especially among the uninsured.

sweetie : LOL the hate rears again. Now we are going back 20 years to try and blame someone for something that has been mutilated by GOP congress. I am still waiting for Trump big beautiful healthcare bill that is going to fix it 6 years and still nothing. Obama is not POTUS, stop the blame game from the past.

#msg6024577e : And if I understand it correctly you can easily die if you have a critical situation because you are not seen in a timely manner.

@ Donnawisdom: You can also end up in a critical situation because you didn't have access to basic health care in the first place. I believe this discussion is about providing a basic level of care through government funding-not guaranteeing everyone unlimited or premium medical care.

I also believe in personal responsibility. Those who can afford additional or supplemental coverage can choose to purchase it. But what about the most vulnerable people who genuinely cannot afford additional coverage?

And not everyone who finds themselves in that position has always been there. People can lose jobs, income, insurance, or earning power after spending years as productive, competitive wage earners. That is precisely why the question of a basic health-care safety net matters.

Universal basic coverage and personal responsibility are not mutually exclusive.

Probably not wanting to, just cannot pay for it. That was the whole point of Obamacare, trying to make it affordable on the markets, but apparently people opposed affordable health care, so here we are.

sweetie :
Nobody promised the end of a rainbow. It was an effort to make health insurance more affordable by widening the participation pool. That was the purpose of the penalty for not participating. Kinda like paying teens to do chores, be responsible. But opposers wanted to oppose ths black president because, as Mitch McConnell said, he could not be allowed to be reelected. RESPONSIBLE people want healthcare at affordable pices. What you and so many encourage is irresposibility to oppose the other guy or gal.
Offer a plan.

pickme2 : Im sure you KNOW it wasnt that simple. As soon as it rolled out, doctors and hospitals were jumping ship thanks to Lower reimbursement rates. That created narrow networks and fewer providers. Add in complex burdensome paper work.

It wasnt a red or blue issue, it was a green one.
