Academics, which academics? Less than 50percent of Americans complete college 2 years of college. You know, the years taking introduction to whatever classes. Those are not the let me indoctrinate you with novel concepts years. At least, that was not my experience. What you wrote does sound like indoctrination to me.

I am not sure that is true if you get something like cancer. I believe that is very costly or you just die, I think people these days spend as much as they make or even more not saving for the rainy day.
I have always had pretty good insurance and I save for a rainy day. But I am not sure if most people are in that situation.
I will say that government health care is funded by taxes. I think Canada taxes everyone 40% of pay. So I am not sure we would like paying all those taxes.

A friend of mine is a Chinese national. He described their universal health care to be very basic. You are not seen at the "good"
Hospitals. They have companies that sell supplemental health insurance so you buy what you want. Their universal health care is not 100% free.

Did you have health insurance or were you one of millions of Texans that did not?

And if I understand it correctly you can easily die if you have a critical situation because you are not seen in a timely manner.
There are anecdotes about every country. Try getting care at one of Houston's good hospitals without good health insurance. It is hard even with it.

That has not been my experience. I was dying and I got seen very quickly and had the operation I needed by a really good doctor. But I had good insurance and I could pay whatever was necessary.
Saving is commendable, but if for management of Multiple Myeloma you are prescribed Revlimid, the cost for a month's supply is $17,000 to $25,000 per month. There are other meds, labs, and therapies which are not cheap. I know people that resorted to the Harris County Hosppital for that care. That means, we the tax payers footed that bill. It is not do a ble for most to save enough.

People way overspend during their lifetime. But to be clear I have never had this sort of illness. However if I did I could bear the cost because I saved every single year of my life.

The last state owned asylum closed in the 80s because they couldn't afford the burden of mental treatment for the masses. They pushed it of to the families to deal with. Now you want them to pay for healthcare and mental illnesses for everyone.? I get it man, we probably afford not building 0ne or two additional stealthy bombers and treat a hell of a lot of people. But guess where that dream money will end up in, …the very same political pockets you throw your socialist dreams at. We need less government not more. They have already proven they can't tack care of the sick. Term limits to every branch and political seat. That includes mayors, judges and police chiefs.
That is my point. Many have insurance hospitals don't favor for many reasons. I had 2 friends have a knee replaced last month. One was scheduled quickly, a BCBS employer provided. TmSurgery in a month. The other a lowest tierNCBS. 3 monthsto schedule. Gold level BCBS 1 week inpatient PT. The low tier, outpatient. Whether we like it or not, there are multiple health care levels of care. I don't like it

I don't think the government taking care of health care is a good option. I have very little respect for government run businesses.
Ronald Reagan did the US a tremendous disservice when shifted psychiatric care governments. responsibility to stat and local governments. Kudos for knowing about that terrible situation. By the way, most state and local governments could not handle the burden. MHMR of Texas is a farce for the most part. The local facility is next to Litle Caesar's in Porter.
Health insurance is one thing, the provision of health care is another.
Health insurance should return to a not for profit model.
There are many items in the health care.
