Muscadine fans out there

They are ripe and ready for eating. Lots available around the greenbelts, with many vines reachable without a ladder. Rinse and put in the fridge for a cool, flavorful summer snack!

They're a pretty durable plant as well. They're naturally resistant to many pests and fungal diseases common to hot, humid climates that will often ruin standard table grapes.

No. I grew up in a non alcoholic family so we had jelly instead of wine.

Kittle : We had both - Gram made wine and Mom made jelly! I was too young for the wine at that time of course, but I have since had some home made muscadine wine and it is pretty good. Quite fruity.

Are these the fruit all over the greenbelts right now? They look like berries to me. Maybe there is both berries and grapes?

I have seen people picking these for years and always wondered what they are. Maybe I need to get a bucket!

My aunt made wine with them for years. One year, the batch even came out sparkling. She never could reproduce that phenomenon.

Wonderful memories of picking muscadines at the Hilltop Restaurant property in Cleveland and making homemade jelly with them. Such a simple, special memory I'll always cherish

You got those off the greenbelt? That's cool! Those look great!

A little home brew story - not wine but beer. I grew up in Chi-town and my grandparents grew up during Prohibition and the Chicago Mafia days and things like the St Valentine's Day Massacre etc. Well, it was hot summer night (Chicago can get up in the 90's and even has hit 100's when I was growing up) and it was late. All of a sudden there was a pop, pop, pop like the sounds of gunshots comi from close to the house.

My grandfather woke everyone up and to get on the floor. It wasn't until later that they figured out that it was his home brew beer that was popping the corks in the hot attic. That is one of the fun family stories that gets told at family dinners.

I've seen these, but I've never tried them. I don't know why but I always assumed they were for the birds and/ or other wildlife. Lol. It's never occurred to me to try one! Emoticon
