Understand the Draft FEMA Floodplain Maps for Your Home or Neighborhood

Join the Harris County Flood Control District for a series of virtual information sessions about the recently released draft floodplain maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

If you've wondered what the updated draft maps show for your home or neighborhood, these sessions will help you understand where to look and what it means.

During the sessions, we'll cover:
-What floodplain maps are and why they're being updated
-What's changing in the new draft FEMA maps
-How to use the online Navigator tool to find your property
www.maapnext.org/Int eractive-Map
-What happens next and how you can stay involved

It's important to note that, at this time, these maps are draft and have no regulatory or insurance impacts.

ExCTGuyInTX :
They should provide maps people can understand without needing a training session. It's ridiculous.

And the fact that you can't enlarge it to see doesn't help either

Don't complain to me. Go to one of the sessions and complain to the people who can actually do something about it.

Yep, the device you're on is a factor too on viewing ability.
Typical government stupidity.
On top of that, it's got no bearing on insurance .

I've been dealing with this map for work for a bit now and can zoom in and out on both mobile and desktop just fine. It's easy to understand. There's only a few colors for floodway, 100-year, and 500-year floodplain. I assume the information sessions are for people who haven't used a GIS based map or don't understand floodplains and what they mean.

The draft maps will be subject to public comment after they become preliminary. After they go through the preliminary review process and comment period, they will become pending. During the pending phase, comments are addressed and FEMA makes any final changes. FEMA will issue a Letter of Final Determination and six months later, the maps become final and legally binding for insurance purposes.

MissAmericanPie : I was able to look at the map without a training session and I think I understand my home is not in the flood plane at all.

MissAmericanPie : I understand. I'm on my laptop. I was curious too. You never know what they may do. I wouldn't put it past them to just put all of Kingwood into the 100 year flood plane even if flooding is not a problem for the area.
