#msg6037148If someone asked me if I was related to my brother, I would've said "Hell, no!"
#msg6037139MissAmericanPie : Listen...I'm open to there being something shady going on...it certainly hasn't been ruled out. But if we're debating something, we shouldn't state false things as true. She wasn't asked if her husband was her brother, she was asked if they were related....like, in a normal, healthy conversations, the normal response would be, "oh yeah, you're right, the question was about being related."

#msg6037151Joe : should we state things that haven't yet been proven as true to be true? In a healthy debate..
Here in the USA where we normally can trace our family tree to some extent, we generally know who we are and aren't related to - in an order of some degree. For someone born in Somalia, who fled at the age of 8, and resettled halfway around the globe, the family tree is probably a bit harder to trace. As she currently sits, with the weight of the DOJ at the direction of the POTUS trying to catch her in a lie or any context they can use punitively against her, the interview was likely done under close oversight of her legal team; and it is possible that a definitive answer regarding the question - could not be provided without a dna test. (that did come up during the interview) She has however answered the question in the past
justanirishgirl reacted #msg6037144BooBear : yeah - - that is not what is being posted on here or online. She married him for the purpose of gaining citizenship. But as she addressed last year - Her family came to the US together and gained citizenship together. Her brother, unless older would have become naturalized at the same time as she did, this is an accusation with zero evidence - - played by the MAGA followers (could have been the tea party of the Obama days with their birther stuff) - which she has addressed repeatedly and I don't care about her one way or the other - - she doesn't represent me, nor seems to be breaking any laws, or ethics related to her position

@everyone : I do believe it is a lot more than an immigration issue.

Please use @ everyone sparingly - It should be used if everyone needs an update to a discussion. It shouldn't be used for normal posts with political debate.

" The investigation comes amid longstanding allegations that Omar married her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who critics claim is her brother, to help him obtain legal immigration status in the United States."

Good grief...why the allergy to confirming an easily provable fact? ; )
If you ask most people, with any sense, about marrying a relative the answer should be how would I know if you don't define to what degree. I have no clue about who married who 300 years ago. George Washington has thousands of direct descendants. Ask them if they know that they are not married to another Washington descendant. There are too many genealogists on this site.
In court or in interviews, stating "not to my knowledge" is a very good answer in many respects. Because a lot of cases hinge upon what did you know, and when did you know it. So, in the unlikely event DNA proves that Omar's ex really was brother. It might not have been known to her at the time. How is this possible you say? There's a whole lotta shocks across the land regarding DNA results everyday. Some pleasant. Others not so much.
