Update: Suspect Dies in Shooting Involving Humble Police at Academy on FM 1960

The man shot during the police encounter at Academy Sports + Outdoors on FM 1960 in Humble yesterday, Wednesday, October 21st, later died at a hospital, according to Humble police. Two officers were involved, and neither was injured. Police Chief Kris Battenfield said the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office alerted his department around 12:15 PM that a theft suspect was entering Humble. Officers found a vehicle matching the description in the Academy parking lot and approached the man. Police said there was no pursuit before they located the vehicle.

Humble police say the man allegedly fired at officers as they tried to take him into custody. An officer allegedly returned fire, striking the suspect. Both officers were wearing body cameras, according to police. The man's name has not yet been released and the shooting remains under investigation. The theft accusation and account of who fired first remain allegations.

txmusil : Sad that man was a criminal. If he wasn't, he may still be alive. Did you know others cars in the area were struck. One lady's car had, I think, 4 bullets in the drivers side door. She would be dead if she had been in her car. At least this criminal will not be let out of jail in 2 days.

txmusil :
It is sad indeed however the situation could have been worse considering he was an alleged criminal. Innocent lives may have been saved.

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : An old AM radio host used to call that "instant rehabilitation." That guy made bad choices all day that cost him everything. He chose to commit the crimes, he chose to end up being pursued by police, he got out of the vehicle holding a gun and chose to fire it at police. There are several crossroads in the day where he could have chosen to do the right thing and lived to tell about it.

This is heartbreaking for his family. The taxpayers will not keep him incarcerated for years. That is extremely expensive. I am firmly opposed to long prison sentences. I believe that has a very poor outcome. I believe successful rehabilitation is rare.

Statistics identify a core of recidivists that deservedly get a lot of bad press. Otherwise, the results are not what most of us think.`

Cracklins: there wasn't a Chase. He entered the Humble area and law-enforcement knew he was heading that way , so there was a BOLO in place

Sorry. I mistook one LEO passing him to another as a form of chasing. I am still interested in why there was any interest in his detention in the first place.
