justanirishgirl : They halted the execution for the time being. She killed another girl and kept part of her skull for a keepsake according to reports.

She was 18 when she committed a brutal murder. The sentence was appropriate for the crime. It's a horrible situation that she has been incarcerated for 32 years waiting on the judgement to be carried out. No doubt, she is not the same person at 50, that she was at 18. She should pay for the crime but they should not be waiting 32 years to execute someone. Especially given the circumstances of the evidence in this particular case.

Court temporarily halts Christa Pike's execution in Tennessee
www.msn.com/en-us/ne ws/other/court-tempo rarily-halts-christa -pike-s-executi

A United States district court has temporarily stayed the execution of Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee's death row, just hours before she was scheduled to receive a lethal injection on Wednesday.

Although the execution has been halted, it could still proceed later Wednesday, an attorney for Pike said, as the state quickly asked the U.S. Supreme Court to override the last-minute district court order. If it does happen, Pike would become the only woman executed in Tennessee in the last 200 years.

Why would they halt it. That's her sentence. She's been on death row for decades. I just don't have any pity for her for what she did to that girl.

TxManiac : She was found guilty, sure people change but too late for that now. She beat the system out of 32 years and knew it was coming, so here it is, pay up.

UptownGirl : We agree. Just seems absurd that they are allowed to linger for so long. You are not executing the person that committed the crime at that point. Maybe a cap like 5 years or something would be better. If you can't appeal your sentence in 5 years maybe you should just get it done.

UptownGirl : My opinion: Justice had been done. Imagine how much money it cost to hold her on death row for 32 years. Based on the available evidence, there was not question of guilt. On average, it costs between $60,000 and $90,000 per year to house a death row inmate in the United States. 60*32=1,920,000.00.

TxManiac : I have seen numbers like that, but I find it hard to believe. You get the just bare minimum, and guards are paid next to nothing. Think the numbers are highly inflated.

UptownGirl : From AI:
The increased annual maintenance costs are driven by specific operational requirements:
• High-Security Isolation: Death row inmates are typically housed in single-occupancy cells and isolated from the general population. Supermax-style segregation facilities cost two to three times more to operate than standard maximum-security facilities.
• Enhanced Staffing: Managing segregated, high-security wings requires a significantly higher ratio of correctional officers to inmates.
• Aging Demographics: Because the appeals process takes so long, inmates average nearly 19 years on death row. This creates an aging inmate population with exponentially higher geriatric and medical care expenses.

UptownGirl : This figure varies significantly by state, with some high-cost states like California spending up to $135,000 annually per capital inmate. Across nearly all jurisdictions, keeping an inmate on death row costs roughly double to triple the amount spent on an inmate in the general prison population
