TEXASGIRLMAMMA :
Yes they want all the pickets on their side but want to split the cost evenly.

When I told him I wanted the fence replaced exactly as it is now (cedar pickets both sides) he refused to split the cost and said I should pay the cost for pickets on my side 🙄.

Really weird I thought.

Since the cedar fence is only 4 years old and in great shape. I declined and told him I wouldn't pay.

I'll see what he does….

I don't know why they want to replace it. They have a pool and spend a lot of time out there. Most of the fence on their side is blocked by tall azaleas.

Both of my side neighbors worked with us. We all have cedar pickets on both sides, split everything 50/50.

PlaneCrazy :
I don't see why you can't negotiate.

Pay 50% for it to stay the way it is. I doubt the housing price was affected at all by the which side of the fence faced the yard. Everyone accepted the way it is.

If they want to change it, whoever wants it to change has to pay a higher percentage. I think it's just common sense if they want to be vocal about what they value. They should pay 60%. But maybe start with 75% so you can settle for 60% eventually. They have to justify why they want 50% if they are going to demand a change because they are asking you to give up something you have that they want.

PlaneCrazy :
4 year old cedar fence should be fine. Myself cedar is the best, thicker cedar pickets are great. I wouldn't replace probably just needs a repair here and there with exterior screws not nails, You can ask Alexa for all the information.

PlaneCrazy : I do not blame you! If I were you I would leave the wood on my side. There is no reason to get rid of 4 year old cider pickets.

PlaneCrazy : Texasdad : I also like to see the frame side. I guess its the engineer in me, but I've always done it that way and no complaints from the neighbors. I ask them to go in half on materials and then I build it myself, no charge for labor. Most neighbors are more than willing to share the cost.

My neighbors decided to put another fence next to mine, this has caused rain to be trapped inside causing the boards to rotten.

AliceB : How old is your fence? When we originally put our fence up one of the neighbors did not want to replace their fence. The HOA guy told us to run it along their fence and we did. We never had problems with water getting trapped. They eventually removed their old fence.

Send whatever quotes they gave you and photos to the HOA. They can actually help sometimes.

TEXASGIRLMAMMA :
people!
I did a new fence to repair some storm damage & some wear & some bad posts. One of the neighbors said they won't pay for any of it, one said they would pay their share but didn't, and the 3rd wanted it be all cedar with alternating boards.
So I paid for it all and had the guys do it the way I preferred! With our dogs, I didn't want alternating boards that would allow more chew places.

PlaneCrazy :
Can you alternate the pickets so each of you have somewhat of a pretty side?
