Don't ignore train crossing arms! Houston man dead A 73-year-old man died early Monday after his vehicle was stuck on railroad tracks while he was attempting to drive around lowered crossing arms, before being hit by a train in north Harris County, authorities said. The train's conductor told deputies the man attempted to go around the railroad crossing arms rather than wait for the crossing to clear. His vehicle became stuck on the tracks, and the approaching train hit the car, according to HCSO.
The man was the only person inside the vehicle. He died at the scene, authorities said. His identity has not been released. Aerial footage from the scene showed the train stopped on the tracks with the crossing arm still lowered. The vehicle was several hundred feet ahead of the train. www.chron.com/news/a rticle/houston-train -car-crash-22401447. php

I've always found it strange. People risking their remaining lifespan to try and gain a few seconds or even minutes driving. Seems myopic.

You also have to watch for people behind you when you stop at a R.R. Crossing. Many years ago I was stopped at the crossing. A car came from behind and hit me onto the track as the arms were coming down. I was able to make it across seconds before the train came. I could have been killed.

True story! When I was first driving in my hometown of Cincinnati, I approached a RR crossing. Arms were not down so, I began crossing the tracks when I heard a loud horn sound...the train was barreling down on me! I hit the gas and made it across but dang..terrifying for a new driver. Moral of the story is....don't trust, always look both ways and maybe even..crack your window to hear if a train is coming.

on the east coast it's law to stop and look both ways at a train track -- at least it was when I learned to drive
