#msg5994805I went to a very liberal magnet school in New Orleans in the early 70's. We had no dress code. I wore hot pants and short skirts to school. Y'all would have thought I was a little slut. LOL!

muffy :

Fist time I ever stepped foot into New Orleans was in the late 90s, I swear that state was living in Jim Crow era. I can't imagine the 70's.

I agree at the pool because men don't have breasts. I do know that is a US thing.

muffy : Benjamin Franklin HS didn't care how the kids dressed, the kids were so advanced they wouldn't have even notice a short skirt. They were too busy with their classes.

Ha Ha! Thanks for knowing LOL! When I say I went to Franklin to people from New Orleans, they say "Oh, You went to the smart school!"
You are right--most of the boys were nerds and did't notice. My future husband did though. I wasn't that smart, but smart enough to get in. I didn't need to be that smart in my mind.

muffy : My dad went to Franklin, he graduated late 1950s. Although I didn't live there, it felt like a second home visiting family there. Most of
his graduating class went on to be doctors, he chose a different career. He would tell me the stuff they would do after school and those were some naughty kids lol. He almost blew up his house one time doing sciences experiments in the garage.

Thanks for responding. My husband became a dentist. I got an art degree. I am sure your dad rode the street car and ate at Camellia Grill across the street, too. I have great memories.
The worst things my classmates did was go smoke pot at lunch and sneak into the drive in theater.

#msg5994564WahineB : same for me, 1974 hs grad. I have to say that if I got sent home, I got in trouble after school, no discussion. My parents both worked, and my brothers took me to school, so my folks did not always see my outfit. If I Tried to sneak a shorter skirt past, and got sent home, I was grounded. Did not do that twice. My parents did not coddle us, at all. Didn't hurt us none, either.

LittleTexas : I can remember wearing a longer skirt and then rolling it up at the waist to make it shorter.

#msg5994309Every time parents run up to the school and pitch a fit because someone told their little darling angel "NO" then filing suit has greatly contributed to this current behavior. Don't like something…scream and protest about it. Still don't like something…contact the media and claim some form of discrimination. Still can't take "NO" for an answer…sue and drag everyone into court.

So what part of the school dress code should be different for boys and girls? Hmm, boys don',t have to wear a bra.
The issue mentioned was sleeveless. She also mentioned developed girls getting cited while other girls weren't.

muffy :

Back then, Louisiana was the only place I've ever been to that used the N-word with the hard R. Cursed at me for shaking a black man's hand and called the local sheriff on me because I gave a little money to another black man. In small diner/restaurant people stopped eating and just stared at me and DW. I ordered coffee and a muffin then was asked me to leave because I could not eat the muffin in the restaurant. I was like WTF?

By that point I swore I thought I was either going to get lynched or see my first one.

KingwoodNana : this is what I'm referencing. Boys and girls are different.

" I noticed a troubling pattern: taller and more physically developed girls were frequently targeted by dress code enforcement, while boys seemed immune to such scrutiny for similar attire.
This experience highlights a fundamental issue: the current Humble ISD dress code is both sexist and inconsistently applied, unfairly targeting girls over boys. It's time for this outdated and discriminatory code to be revised to ensure fairness and equality for all students, regardless of their gender.
The dress code claims to encourage a focus on education, yet its current enforcement often detracts from academic learning by disproportionally drawing attention to girls' bodies. It perpetuates the harmful notion that girls are responsible for boys' distractions, shifting the blame instead of fostering a healthy educational environment."
