Maybe a second opinion that might have better news or help. Lake Houstom Animal Hospital are really reasonable too. I would go to them for a second opinion.

Sincerelyme :
Read your post earlier today... Speechless. Been there. It's a difficult situation. My input?

Keep your GS as comfortable and happy as you can for now. There's so many other fur babies just waiting and longing to be in your world.

In short, heartbreaking as it is... You can only do what you can do.

My last sweetie passed years ago. The family spent a lot of money fighting the tide ... She still gone and I still miss her every day.

I'm hoping someday, I can make a difference again

#msg5974786Sincerelyme : Animal Care of Lake Houston won't gouge you like that. Take her in for their opinion.

MissAmericanPie : This is where I go with my dog (and my cat for years before that). They are much more reasonable than Kingwood Vets IMO and very professional. I trust them and a 2nd opinion is warranted. However, they are sometimes hard to get a first appt with if you aren't an established patient.

I would explain the situation to them on the phone and let them know it is pretty much an emergency situation. I would also ask the vet about a rehoming situation if it came to that (I hope it doesn't) because they might know someone willing and able to take over.

I just saw your update. I am so sorry. You did well by this little being and you did not forsake her. She knew how much you loved her and the suffering is over. In time I hope you will be able to open your heart to another one that is waiting to be so loved. For now, be comforted by knowing you did your best by her.

#msg5974863Update.... So upon further testing we were told that she was having severe kidney failure, had bladder stones causing an obstruction and her bladder was 3x's bigger than what it needed to be. With all that said, they advised us to euthanize considering the pain and discomfort, and due to severity of the kidney failure it was a huge risk through surgery. We had to make a quick and sudden decision and we are completely heartbroken. Still havent told my kids and dont know how to approach that yet. Thank you everyone for your advice.

Sincerelyme : I'm so sorry! It is difficult to let go of our pets. They are our family and we love them just like we love our kids. Letting go of her is the most loving thing you could do. If the vet recommended this, I am sure it was the right thing. As far as your kids go, how old are they? Surely they will miss their little dog. You just have to tell them in the most simple way possible. They really don't need any details but you have to answer their questions honestly. They need to be told the pup has died and will not come back. Don't tell them the pet went to sleep and will not wake up. That will make them afraid to sleep. I found this article and it may help you discern how to handle it all with the children.

Choose Words That Are Direct, Honest, and Calm
According to Arquette, when talking with your kids about what happened, use the words "death" and "dying" rather than phrases such as "went to sleep," "went away," "went to heaven" or "crossed the rainbow bridge."

"Make sure your child understands that dying means that the pet's body has stopped working, and the pet will not come back. Subtleties and euphemisms can cause confusion and anxiety, and lead to misunderstandings and mistrust," says Arquette.

So sorry you lost your little furbaby Emoticon Kidney disease is so hard on them, and when they have bladder issues as well, it can be quite an investment in time and money to maintain them. At least she is not in any pain anymore.

#msg5974873Sincerelyme : Oh my God I am so sorry, but there is no better demonstration of love towards their beloved pet than knowing when the right time is to let them go❤️…. how old are your children?

FreebyrdII : 5 and 6. They keep asking when shes coming back.. they saw her be very sick so they're worried about her. Currently just saying shes still at the doctors office and they're seeing if she can feel better. My son was very attached to her

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : thank you so much. Yes, the whole drive home i was thinking I have to word it correctly. Cant say she was sleeping because then they'll be afraid to sleep and "not wake up", cant say she ran away because im sure my son will say lets get in the car and go find her. These are some good suggestions though. Thank you so much
