San Jacinto County Commissioners Approve Emergency Pay Raise for Understaffed County Jail
The San Jacinto County Commissioners Court has approved Sheriff Greg Capers' request for an emergency pay raise for jailers due to a severe understaffing crisis at the county jail. Chief Deputy Tim Keen provided a presentation illustrating the extent of the problem, including photos of injuries sustained by jailers due to attacks by inmates. Keen argued that low pay rates were making it difficult to attract and retain jailers, and proposed a pay raise of $3.52 per hour for jailers with a permanent license and $2.52 per hour for jailers with a temporary license. The funding for the raises would be covered by housing "contract inmates" and would not require a tax increase. The pay raises were approved, along with the payment of comp time and overtime for current jailers. The San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office is now hiring with a starting pay of $17 to $21 per hour, plus benefits.
