A once-empty lot in the South Woodland Hills neighborhood is being brought back to life thanks to a community-driven project led by Jewel, a local landscape and outdoor living company. The project — currently known as the Morton Memorial Trailway — honors the late Kim Morton, a former resident whose property was generously donated by his estate.

Mr. Morton’s lot, which sat vacant after his home was demolished, is now being transformed into a trailway access point connecting residents to the neighborhood’s extensive greenbelt system. The new walkway will make it easier for nearby families to enjoy Kingwood’s signature trail network for walking, biking, and outdoor recreation.

Jewel’s work on the project includes installing a new sidewalk and seating areas with benches, adding fencing on both sides of the lot, a little free library and designing landscaping with large shade trees to create a welcoming entryway to the trails.

“The community response has been amazing,” said a representative from Jewel. “Neighbors have been stopping by every day to check on the progress and share their excitement. It’s been wonderful to see how much this project means to everyone who lives here.”

The Morton Memorial Trailway now serves as both a tribute to Mr. Morton and a new way for South Woodland Hills residents to enjoy the outdoors.
