Interview With Steve Cook, Owner of Hometown Painting - Kingwood

As part of our ongoing Getting to Know Your Local Businesses series, this week we sat down with Steve Cook, owner of Hometown Painting.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer?
Hometown Painting offers a wide variety of residential painting services. We specialize in exterior and interior painting, as well as garage floor coatings, pool deck painting, fence staining, pressure washing, and much more.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Funny story…My wife and I have 3 daughters, and in the early 2000s they were attending Primrose School in Summerwood.  It is an amazing school, but tuition quickly exceeded our mortgage payment.  If you have children in daycare, you feel my pain.  I learned from my dad to be incredibly handy and realized I can use these skills to earn extra money.  Through Facebook, I became the neighborhood handyman.  I would work my full-time job and during the evenings and weekends I would be out doing “odd jobs”. In fact, Hometown Painting began under the name, Odd Jobs Handyman Service.  One day I was asked to paint an exterior, so I decided to invest in a paint sprayer.  I watched a few You Tube videos for pointers and completed the job. The
customer was very happy with my work (so was I) so decided to add exterior painting to my list of services.  I was already doing plenty of interior jobs, so why not?  This is when I found my niche, I was really good at this!

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
We take extreme pride in our work and use only the best paints and materials. The materials we use to complete your project will continue to last far beyond the competitor.  We often see jobs where the paint has been “watered down”.  Not only does this cause uneven coverage, it leads to your home needing to be repainted within a couple of years. With the materials we use, your paint will last an average of 8-10 years. We do not make any money off of the paint, in fact, we pass our contractor savings direct to you so we can use the best paints with the best results.  I am personally involved in every project, beginning to end.  We work within your budget and complete the job within the time frame laid out. Every bid is emailed in full detail.  We break the project down room by room. This gives you the opportunity to split the job up, if needed, or we offer a discount when hired to complete the job in full.  We take pride in our transparency.  We do not have hidden costs.  If something unexpected occurs, we always discuss the situation to create a solution that is within the best interest of our customer. 

What is your favorite part of running this business?
Hands down, our customers! We enjoy meeting new people, building relationships, and experiencing their happiness when the job is complete.  This is more than just a job to us.  Our goal is to form a lasting relationship so Hometown Painting will be the first company you think of when a need arises.  We have done very little advertising.  Word of mouth is how we have grown thus far.  We have learned the best compliment is a referral from a satisfied customer.
 
Who is your target market or ideal customer/client?

Anyone and everyone!  We will do anything from small interior jobs, such as painting a laundry room, bedroom, orbath, all the way up to painting the entire interior and exterior of your home.  People are amazed at how a little bit of paint can freshen up a home and increase curb appeal.
 
Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
I was born and raised in Kingwood, KHS class of ’97. From 2000 to 2002 I attended culinary school in Washington State where I met my wife, Shauna.  We moved back to Kingwood in 2003.  Our twin girls were born in 2004 and my youngest daughter was born in 2007. Yes, I live with my wife, 3 daughters and a female dog. HELP!  I worked in restaurants as an Executive Chef and General Manager for approximately 16 years.  Working in the restaurant industry is exciting and fast paced, but there was no work/life balance.  I needed to make a change and become more involved as a father. I was hired into a sales position for a distribution company I purchased from as a chef. This gave me the freedom to be more involved with the extra-curricular actives my girls participated in and be home for dinner every night! I worked for this company for approximately 8 years.  During this time, I continued to paint homes on the side to help pay for travel lacrosse, the dance team, and whatever else my kids were involved in. There was a corporate shuffle at work, so I decided it was time to move on.  I enjoyed painting and knew I had what it takes to run a successful painting company.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?

Our goal is to become the most recognized painting company in Kingwood, Atascocita, Porter, New Caney and beyond.  We will be bringing on a professional who specializes in cabinet refreshing, as well as, building a sales team.  I will continue to be involved in every job beginning to end.  Although, we will be growing, our promise to provide extraordinary service will always stand.
