Creativity Shell Encourages Focus on Mental Health with BeStillandDraw Challenge - Kingwood

How much time do you take out of your day to focus on your mental health?

(Kingwood, TX) 95% of people spend less than 5 minutes a day solely focusing on their mental health and on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 1:13 PM or (13:13 PM), the Creativity Shell is asking the community to stop what they are doing, dedicate that time to yourself, dedicate that time to healing and dedicate that time to positive mental health through their unique #bestillanddraw challenge.

The Creativity Shell is a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The organization teaches classes such as sewing/textile arts, cooking, building and other creative trades to students in our studios, libraries, schools, ABA therapy centers, the juvenile justice system as well as shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. All classes are designed to teach children essential life skills, practical skills and positive mental health coping skills.

The unique #bestillanddraw experience was designed by educational psychologist and founder of the Creativity Shell, Shelancia Daniel as a way to teach children a creative way to learn to self-regulate. “Self regulation is a skill used to understand and monitor your own behavior.” says Daniel. “By learning to self-regulate, you can control your reactions to strong emotions such as anger and excitement plus you can also calm yourself down after something exciting or upsetting happens in order to focus.”

The #bestillanddraw challenge is a great tool to learn self-regulation because it teaches you to self monitor your time (with the help of a handy countdown video). There is opportunity to self instruct as you do not have to draw anything specific and there is zero requirement for perfection. Most importantly, self regulation involves self reinforcement and the Creativity Shell is hoping that users reinforce the behavior of taking at least 13 minutes out of each day to focus on their mental health.

Donations in the amount of $1, $3 or $13 can also be made to the Creativity Shell when registering for this challenge so they can continue to find creative ways to unite the community and focus on arts education for positive mental health… especially among our youths.
