(Kingwood, TX) It was only 7 short years ago when Kingwood.com first reported that a new organization called the Creativity Shell was
opening a makerspace for kids in Kingwood. That makerspace was a small,
1000 sq studio at the front of Kingwood that the community watched grow
and grow over the years into two mobile studios, moving into different
studios and finally into their own 20,000 sq foot building in the heart
of Kingwood.
For anyone who has not heard about the Creativity
Shell, they are a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative
trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. The
organization teaches classes such as sewing/textile arts, cooking,
building, fencing, pottery and other creative trades to students in
their studios, libraries, schools, ABA therapy centers, the juvenile
justice system as well as shelters that rescue children from
homelessness and human trafficking. All classes are designed to teach
children essential life skills, practical skills and positive mental
health coping skills.
The organization is led by Kingwood local,
Shelancia Daniel who is an educational psychologist, sewing teacher,
cooking teacher, art enthusiasts, fabric/textile designer and part time
bus driver. Second in command at the Creativity Shell is Mara Valentina
who started working with the organization back in 2019, she is a crochet
artist by trade and the facilities director at the Creativity Shell.
After
teaching their classes at local sex trafficking shelters, the
Creativity Shell found that poor mental health, low self confidence and
low self esteem was the main catalyst for the dangerous like human
trafficking that are plaguing our children. In 2019, the organization
shifted their focus to prevention and have been using their programs
ever since as a medium to boost the confidence, self esteem and mental
health for children as young as 3 in our community!
With programs
such as their annual fashion show “Creativity Rocks” where local
children get to make their own clothing and rock it down a runway in
front of 500+ people to the organization's semi-annual Munchkin Market
where children get the opportunity to sell their own handmade creations…
The Creativity Shell has woven itself into their own fabric for the
Kingwood community during the last 7 years!
On Saturday, August
26, 2023, the Creativity Shell will be hosting an open house for the
community to swing by their Kingwood Studio from 10AM - 1PM. There will
be an opportunity to participate in local arts, crafts and register for
the organization’s Fall 2023 classes and workshops.
