As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with
Elizabeth Maranto, owner of Tutor Doctor Kingwood!

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer and how long have you been around?
I launched my business in August 2022. Tutor Doctor Kingwood offers one-to-one personalized tutoring in the comfort of your home, whether that be in-person or virtually. Our personalized approach targets the academic needs of each student. We consider the goals of both parents and students, gaps in learning, learning styles and personality, and any needed accommodations. With this information, we create an individual academic plan and match students to the best tutors.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
I made the difficult decision to leave teaching after the 2021-2022 school year. I was unsure what I would do next but started preparing for a job in the corporate world. When the Tutor Doctor opportunity came across my desk, I was impressed with the company model and how they help students. Tutor Doctor’s values and purpose aligned perfectly with what I believed as an educator. Students who struggle academically often need someone to work with them one-on-one to recognize and work on any learning gaps. I knew that working with families who need help in our current educational environment would fulfill my need to help students grow. I love matching a student to a tutor that will connect with them, build their academic confidence, and help them succeed.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
Tutor Doctor franchises are very much community based. I am incredibly proud to serve Kingwood and the surrounding areas. Although we are a global company with franchises in 16 countries, each Tutor Doctor franchise focuses on the unique needs of their community. I love this area! All four of my children attended the amazing schools of Kingwood, and I taught in the Porter area. I feel like I have a good idea of the struggles that teachers, parents, and students face. I want Tutor Doctor Kingwood to be a part of the effort to help students be successful academically and, ultimately, in life.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
What I enjoy most is talking to families and finding ways to help them. I listen to what is happening in the student’s academic life, and we work together to develop a plan. As a former educator, I understand that the goal is for teachers to provide individualized learning opportunities in the classroom. However, teachers often don’t have the resources needed to make that possible in a classroom of 20 or more. I love that I can offer that to students! Each student receives a dedicated tutor that provides the individual attention needed.

Who is your target market or ideal customer/client?
We believe in lifelong learning. Our services are open to anyone who has a desire to learn. Most of our students are between the ages of 4-20 who need tutoring for school courses such as math or reading. However, we can find a tutor for students of any age who need instruction in languages, test prep, etc.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
I was born and raised in northeast Texas. I married and moved overseas with my Air Force husband, Rico. We have 4 wonderful adult children, a beautiful granddaughter and we recently added 2 more teenage daughters to our family. I was able to be a stay-at-home mother while my children were young. Eventually, I was able to accomplish my lifelong dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. I have worked with children in many different aspects throughout my life, but I really love opening the world to a child through learning. Reading is what I love to teach the most. The ability to read, understand, and think critically about your reading opens minds and doors of opportunity. My favorite quote is from Malala Yousufzai and it illustrates how I feel: “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
Tutor Doctor Kingwood is dedicated to being a part of the community and you can find us at many of the local events around town. The biggest events we are involved in are the Kingwood Mardi Gras Festival and Parade and the Kingwood July 4th Parade and Festival. We also love getting involved with local school events such as fall festivals. Please give us a call and let us know how we can help your school!
The event that is closest to my heart is our Summer Reading Challenge. Tutor Doctor franchises across the world run this event for their local communities. I am so happy to offer this to our community for the first time this year! I love reading and believe that it has the potential to open doors to our students. I would like every child to read or be read to this summer and beyond. There are so many things to be explored, real or imaginary, in the pages of a book.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
Our “business” is truly to help students grow in their learning. Tutor Doctor Kingwood wants to work individually with each family to create a plan that aligns with the academic goals of parents and students. Our program is completely customizable to fit the needs of every family.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
Our goal is to become an integral part of the community by working with the curriculum being taught in the classrooms and supporting the learning of each individual student. As we grow and expand to the surrounding areas, we will continue to be a family business based on our initial values and goals: to serve our community with integrity, to provide individualized learning for our students, to give our tutors opportunities to grow, and to align with Tutor Doctor’s mission to “change the trajectory of students’ lives.”
