As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, we sat down this week with Stuart Averett, owner and operator of Five Star Painting of Kingwood.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
Five Star Painting of Kingwood is locally owned and operated by me, Stuart Averett, and my wife Donna. We started the business in 2013. I enjoy meeting and working with customers and painters. Donna, the pretty one in the picture, works in our office. We have been a member of Partnership Lake Houston, formerly Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce for several years.

Since 2013, we have completed thousands of painting projects. Five Star Painting of Kingwood specializes in interior and exterior painting, both residential and commercial.

    

We work in Kingwood, Humble and surrounding areas, including Porter, Atascocita, Fall creek, Eagle Springs, Summerwood, and others. We consider every project to be our audition for our customer’s next project.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
I retired from a career as a technical trainer and writer in 2012, but I felt that I was not finished working. I wanted to do something special, and I wanted to be my own boss. Have you ever been there? I wanted to run my own business. One that would become known for providing excellent service to its customers.
I didn’t want to start from scratch, so franchising was the way to go for me. When I found Five Star Painting, I bought a marketing territory. I liked the Five Star Painting people and I liked the business concept. My brother, Mark in Marietta, Georgia also bought a Five Star Painting business at about the same time and runs it with his wife.
These days, Five Star Painting, along with several other residential service companies is part of the Neighborly brand, based in Waco, Texas.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
My favorite part of running Five Star Painting of Kingwood is the time when a project is completed, the masking

We repair exterior door trim and replace complete door and frame units.
We refinish cabinets and update kitchen backsplashes.

We work with the best cabinetmaker in Kingwood.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
We work best with property owners who focus on having their painting project done right. We are a painting company. We don’t do extensive renovations, but we also do carpentry and other repairs that must be completed before we can paint.
We replace exterior trim and some sections of siding. We replace the metal weather seal on exterior doors. We refinish front doors with stain or paint. We stain wood decks.

We replace missing sheetrock in ceilings and walls, including matching the ceiling or wall texture to make our repair disappear. We install missing baseboards, stair treads, and window stools.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
Five Star Painting of Kingwood has built its reputation by providing excellent customer service. We don’t try to be the lowest-priced painters in the neighborhood. We focus on customer satisfaction on every project.
