As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Orion Kester, owner of Memories To View.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around? We help celebrate birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, welcome homes, retirements, and more special occasions with our yard signs. We started Memories to View in July 2020 when everyone was in lock down from COVID.

How did the business get started? My wife and I wanted to help bring some type of joy and excitement while everyone was in lock down during the height of COVID in mid 2020. We felt awful that families had to do drive by birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and welcome homes. We felt that there was something that we could do to help bring joy and happiness to people during the pandemic. It broke our heart seeing that people couldn’t hug each other and they had to see family members through windows. We thought that our signs in peoples yards would help bring a smile to their faces and make them feel good, even if it was just for a few minutes. We felt that we could do our own little part to help be a light in the world and do something good for people while everyone was struggling with the pandemic.

Tell us a couple of things that you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition? I’m so honored and proud that we are able to provide this service to others. We’ve heard countless stories about how excited and happy our signs are for people when they see them. People send us pictures and videos all the time, and it warms our heart when we see them.

What is your favorite part of running this business? Having the opportunity to do something good for others. Last year we did yard cards for a 10 year old boy who has cancer. His mom explained to us that every single year he missed having a birthday party because of one reason or another due to being in hospitals and such. 2020 was going to be the first year that he could have an actual birthday party with people over at the house. However, due to COVID and cancer, they were not able to have the birthday party. His mom put together a surprise drive by birthday party with the local police department and fire department as a surprise for him. She also let us put our signs in the front yard to help celebrate. I was so humbled and honored to do this for him. Stories like that make me proud to be able to offer our services.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best? Our yard signs are for anyone no matter the age or special occasion. We celebrate everyone from 1 year old to 100+ years old. We also help celebrate all kinds of special occasions. Graduations are a big deal for us and we love helping our local high school seniors celebrate this very important milestone.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background? How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? I am a true entrepreneur at heart, I love helping other people and I love business. My wife and I built Memories to View from the ground up and it is our own brand. We didn’t want to buy into a franchise, because we love to be able to make our own calls and decisions. We also own Orion’s Fitness in Kingwood. We have owned that gym for a while now and we also started it from scratch and it is our own brand.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention? Graduations are a very busy time for us and we book up extremely fast. The sooner that you reserve the date the better. Last year we booked up very quickly and we had to turn down a lot of people because we just didn’t have the inventory available to help.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business? My wife, daughter, and I are not from Kingwood, but we absolutely love it here. It’s home to us and our daughter has lived here since she was one year old. Kingwood holds a very special place in our hearts and it brings us so much joy and happiness to be able to service our community through Memories to View and Orion’s Fitness.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years? I don’t see the signs going away anytime soon. The signs have actually been around for a long time; COVID just made them really popular. The graphics and the designs are always changing and we stay on top of the changes. One really cool thing is that our neighbor who owns SignWorkz is our sign guy and is a local Kingwood resident just like us. So when you support us you are actually helping two local Kingwood family businesses.
