As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses"
series, we sat down this week with Orion Kester, certified personal trainer, nutrition coach and owner of Orion's Fitness.
Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
I started Orion’s Fitness in November 2015, so we have been around for 5+ years. We offer beginner fitness classes, boot camp, one on one personal training, and we teach fitness classes at 3 retirement communities in the area. I’m currently working on expanding into more retirement communities as well.
How did the business get started?
Ever since joining the military in 2013 I have been passionate about exercise and resistance training. I fell in love with working out. I didn’t develop the passion for helping others exercise until I had a couple of knee surgeries and had to go through physical therapy. That experience helped to ignite my passion to turn my love of exercise into helping others get healthy through resistance training. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and once I got my personal trainer certification, I started Orion’s Fitness on the journey to help as many people as I could.
Tell us a couple of things that you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
I’m proud of where we started and where we are now. I’m not a franchise and I don’t have investors. I started this from the ground up with no money. I now have an incredible team of 4 ladies that I work with. They are the reason we are still around and growing. They are the reason that our clients keep coming back and want to workout. Without my instructors I wouldn’t be in business. I’m very proud of my incredible team. I’m also very proud of my clients a lot of our clients have been with us for years, I’ve seen them grow and accomplish many things they didn’t think they could do. We have become known for our beginner fitness classes. There’s a lot of places for those that are already in great shape, but there isn’t a place for those who are brand new to exercise or haven’t worked out in a very long time. I wanted to create a safe place for them where they don’t feel intimidated, scared, or like they aren’t in good enough shape to workout. I wanted to create a program that takes things slowly and really focuses on proper form and movement so they can get back into shape without risk of injury. I think that our beginner fitness classes and our family-like atmosphere separates us from the competition.
What is your favorite part of running this business?
We have a private Facebook group for our classes and seeing our clients interact when our instructors check in for classes makes me smile and makes my heart full. Seeing how much our clients love our instructors and trust them makes me very happy.
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Our ideal client are those who are intimidated by the gyms because they feel like they just don’t belong there. It makes me very sad thinking about someone who desperately wants to make a positive change in their life go to the gym and then feel insecure about themselves because of all the fit people around. They also might feel like they are lost and have no idea what to do so they get on the treadmill or elliptical and neglect resistance training which will benefit them the most.
Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background? How did you decide to get involved in this line of work?
I started Orion’s Fitness all on my own with no money and investors. I’m not a franchise either. I’m very proud of where we are today and I’m very excited to see where we will be in the next 5 years. I am a veteran, and I’m also local to Kingwood. My wife, daughter, and I moved to Kingwood in 2014 from Houston and we absolutely love Kingwood!
Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
Your first class is always free. Come out and join us. We want you to try out a class and see if we are a good fit for you.
Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
Most people who join our classes stay for years because of the family like environment that we have. A lot of people look forward to coming to class each day, not to just workout but to be around their friends, laugh, and have a good time while exercising.
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years? I want everyone in our area to know about us and our beginner fitness program that we offer. I want people to know that they do have a place to go to start their fitness journey. Just as I tell all of my clients, "PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION."
