As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Dr. Maribel Colon, the pediatric dentist at Kingwood Pediatric Dentistry.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
We are a passionate pediatric dental office that specializes in treating children of all ages. It’s our goal to make sure that your child has a positive dental experience, giving them the attention he or she deserves.
Whether your child needs a routine exam, cleaning, fluoride, x-rays, sports mouth guard, sealants, fillings, extractions, crowns, etc., or oral conscious sedation, we are ready to make a difference in your child’s life.
This dental office was originally opened by Dr. Steven Farrell almost 30 years ago.  Once he decided to retire, I took over this respected facility in 2017.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. I attended the University of Puerto Rico and graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. I then earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, graduating in the top three percent of my class and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.
Through my volunteer activities and patient interactions during dental school, I realized what I had always known. I love working with children. In 2000, I completed a two year residency specializing in pediatric dentistry at the School of Dentistry at the University of Puerto Rico, where I received extensive training in all aspects of pediatric dentistry. When my husband, Dr. Bernardo Roblesgil, an oral surgeon, and I moved here to Texas in 2003, I started my own private practice.
I’m a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Houston Association of Pediatric Dentists and the Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentists.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
I’m very proud that our dentistry office has grown by word of mouth. We are very focused on education and prevention. When a parent indicates that they are happy with our service then I know we have provided the best compassionate care to their children.
As a parent, I understand the importance of choosing the right dentist for my child. It’s a privilege to deliver dental care for kids of all ages.
It’s our mission to educate each child to grow up with a healthy beautiful smile.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
I love treating children and making them happy. If I can get a smile from a not-so-willing patient, I know that they will come back and, in just a few visits, they will gladly sit in the dentist chair. It's so rewarding to see a patient
come around after a mom or dad has indicated that they were going to be a tough patient. I’m trained to work with children and their smile is worth it all.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Our ideal customer is any baby or child up to the age of 21.  We have college students come to see us when they are in town because they are comfortable with us.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
After Hurricane Harvey, we were closed for 9 months. We had only been opened for six months when I took over the practice. Our neighbors have supported us through our re-build and we will continue to give back to this community.
To date, we’ve supported local schools and churches around the community by making donations.  We have helped sponsor HUMBLE ISD’s screening of the movie Screenagers, helped sponsor Kingwood High School’s newspaper and helped sponsor Pine Forest and Foster Elementary School homework folders.  We have gone to local daycares and schools to help educate and promote dental health awareness.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
We will continue to provide our specialized dentistry for infants, children, teens, and children with special needs in a “child friendly” environment that our neighbors expect. Our patients are happy to come see us and that makes us happy too.
