As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with John Tallent and Tom McDonald owners of SkeeterCide Mosquito & Wildlife control.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?

We are a locally owned and operated pest control company that specializes in both mosquito and wildlife control. When you do business with us, you are doing business with a neighbor and will be treated as such.

We have nearly 20 years combined experience in a multitude of service areas including mosquito control for both residential and commercial, misting system installation/maintenance and wildlife exclusion and trapping services.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work?

While working for a well-established local service provider, we noticed gaps in the industry that our community could benefit from. We decided to start our own company.  When the right opportunity arose, we also took over operations of an existing wildlife control business. We wanted to be able to address the concerns that have been expressed by our current customer base.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?

We are not your average mosquito contractor. We are a full-service mosquito control company, from top to bottom. We provide services for all things mosquito … from built-in automatic misting systems to street and off-road fogging services at both the residential and commercial level.
We’re proud to be helping homeowners and communities be proactive with mosquito and wildlife control efforts. We like to say, “It’s always better to be proactive, then reactive.”

What is your favorite part of running this business?

The best part of being a business owner is being able to make decisions/plans that actually make a difference. For instance, we have developed custom fogging units on our UTV spraying vehicles that allow us to navigate trails and parks to kill mosquitoes at the source. We are young and innovative business owners who are not settling for complacent industry standards.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?

Everyone! We know that no one likes mosquitoes and no one wants to share their attic with a racoon.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?

We have a “Good Neighbor” program. When you refer your neighbor, you not only get more effective control, you also save money.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?

Due to the high amount of water that our area gets from hurricanes and flooding, mosquitoes are not just a nuisance pest, but rather a disease carrying vessel for Zika and West Nile. We will continue to develop the most effective control solutions to combat this threat and keep our community safe.
