As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Blake Roberts, regional manager of The Clubs of Kingwood and Deerwood.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
As one of the world’s largest private clubs, our diverse facilities offer our members championship golf, tennis courts, fitness and sports center access, a water park, private dining and banquet facilities. We have a total of over 20,000 square feet and over 1,000 acres of lifestyle enjoyment at our two distinct locations, Kingwood Country Club (opened in 1974) and the Deerwood Golf Club (opened in 1982).
We have 90 holes of championship golf with three of our golf courses being consistently ranked as the best in the state. Our recently remodeled Golf Advantage School features an expanded putting green, personalized lessons and club fitting, as well as a lighted driving range.
With a complete staff of tennis professionals to assist, we have 26 tennis courts available at Kingwood. Most of our tennis courts are nestled among the trees, providing needed shade for the avid player. We have been proud to host the Tennis Magazine Demo Day and many USTA sectional events at our Club. A fully stocked sports retail shop is located in the Kingwood Fitness and Sports Center.
We offer junior development programs in both tennis and golf in addition to our kids’ summer camps. Our year-round junior golf program is the best in the state utilizing our Golf Advantage School for weekly clinics and the Marsh Course for weekly play days.
Our 19,000 square foot fitness and sports center includes a complete workout area with cutting-edge fitness equipment, a private group exercise studio, complete men’s and women’s locker rooms and a Kids’ Club for the youngsters.

Our water park offers an adult pool, family pool with diving boards, two water slides, a splash pad and a 500-foot lazy river.  
The Club offers stylish dining rooms, an outdoor patio, and covered verandas for Members and their invited guests to enjoy à la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner along with Sunday Brunch and Nightly Dinner Specials. The Club also has private event spaces of every occasion - wedding, birthday, and anniversary celebrations; family reunions and celebrations of life; corporate retreats and business meetings; charity galas; and golf outings for 16 to 1,000 players.
We truly offer something different for every single person in a household.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work?
I started over 21 years ago at a public golf course. After graduating from Texas A&M with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Agriculture, I was looking for a career and started out working part-time at the course. I fell in love with the business and have been working at a Club ever since.
I’ve been a general manager for facilities located in San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma, Taos New Mexico, Las Vegas, and multiple facilities in Houston (Woodlands, Cypress, Spring and Kingwood).
Ten years ago, I joined ClubCorp. I love being at a Private Club and working in the Club Life business.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
I am most proud of our more than 3,000 members and our dedicated club staff. They are all PART OF THE COMMUNITY and they all support a wide variety of local charities with their time, talents and treasures.
We are known for our diversity of our incredible world class lifestyle-centric amenities and privileges; we are more than just golf courses.
We are owned and operated by ClubCorp, a privately held corporation that operates more than 300 golf and country clubs, and numerous business, sports and alumni clubs worldwide.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
Building relationships with members and our staff is my favorite part. Enriching lives is what we do and we all enjoy making the Club something very special every single day. We are all a part of each other’s lives.  
I also love being outside at one of our two locations. Whether I’m addressing issues on the golf course, at our tennis courts or at another part of our Club, you’ll find me visiting with our members and our staff. It’s definitely not an office job!

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be a golfer to enjoy being a member of The Club. Any individual or family that is looking for another “Home Away From Home” is our ideal customer. You’ll see all ages at our Club, from 4-5 year-olds on the golf courses and tennis courts along with 88-year-olds on the pickleball court.
To insure we reach everyone, we have a wide variety of membership options… Full Golf, Young Executive, Tennis, Fitness and more. Our goal is to fit the wants and needs of all new candidates interested in joining the Club.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
With $50-million of post Harvey renovations complete and additional projects planned for later this summer and fall, the Club has NEVER looked better than it does today.
We are currently winding down our Grand Opening Special Offers for New Members and Member Sponsors. These offers are part of our celebration after completing our renovation and repairs from Hurricane Harvey. Mention this article and these offers can be accessed until July 15.
Typically in June each year, we host a charity golf classic event which benefits ALS research and our Employee Partners Care Foundation (ClubCorp’s non-profit which helps employees in a time of need with such expenses as a funeral costs or the costs of rebuilding a home after a flood). This event also supports our charity of choice, Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM).

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
We do have additional capital projects planned for this year, including expanding our outdoor member dining and patio space, adding a new member entry and a covered walkway, adding heaters to the pool, and evolving towards the new lifestyle Club of the future. Our members want to be engaged in a home away from home and that’s the direction we are headed.
