As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Deloris Akins, Owner of As 1 Akins Productions.

Tell us a bit about your business. What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
We are proud to say that we're a family based production being in business for over 5 years. Our company focus is theater and film. Through our stage plays and acting courses, we want to be the stepping stone for individuals seeking a career in acting. We work with companies and individuals providing Hosting, Acting Classes, Business Presentation Skills, Stage Plays, Event Skits and more.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Growing up I have always wanted to be an actress, but I didn't have the guidance on where or how to start. After moving to Houston the passion was still in me, I couldn't find anything and had no clue on where to start. One day I decided to write my own stage play and put myself on stage. From there, I have been creating and producing. Coming across so many people pursuing acting I wanted to help them. So I starting the acting classes!

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
I am very proud of the fact that I have written, directed and produced 4 stage plays, many actors that started with me are now working as an actor! I am known help others start in the acting industry and build their resumes. I believe my passion to see others grow and understanding of how it feels to go for a "dream" separates me from my competition.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
The favorite part of running my business is working with great people. I have had the opportunity to watch people grow and that's a wonderful feeling. Also, after a stage play when people walk up to me and tell me how the play will help them, is priceless!

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
The ideal client is someone who knows what they want and are willing to listen to the advice I give to them on what it takes to get there. I am able to serve my client best when they are available for training/gigs and open to the suggestions I give to help them grow.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
I believe that everyone is good enough! If you have the drive, I am eager to help show and guide you to where you want to be. I have been told I am "easier" to work with. Being a mom, friend, wife and so much more, I understand life and working towards your dream while "living life" is not easy. I have learned from the gifts that God has giving me. I use them and have learned many things hands on over the years. Connecting with Hollywood and industry professionals has helped me learn the industry more.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
We are currently offering a 20% discount for items purchased this month. We have several new classes starting soon:

Youth Acting Class on Saturdays at 10 am - 1pm (ongoing)
Acting In Your Business: Monday Nights 7 pm - 8:30 pm from May 7th -May 28th
Adult Class Thursday Night 7 pm - 8:30pm from May 3rd - June 7th

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
We also work with business owners that want to become more verse in presentation skills. We help them learn how facial expression, body language and tone play a part in selling your product or service.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
In a couple of years I see As 1 Akins growing in the community- using acting in different areas not just to grow an acting career. We want to be one of the base locations for the families and businesses in the area. Through fun community nights, variety of acting base classes and more.
