As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Allied Mental Health Services.

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
Allied Mental Health Services, PLLC / Allied Hypnosis is an alternative healing office that specializes in Individual Therapy, Family Therapy, Sex Therapy, Couples / Marriage Counseling, Holistic Healing and Hypnotherapy. Safely change unwanted habits, bad attitudes, negative thoughts, and unfulfilling relationships. Let go of anxiety, chronic pain, procrastinating, fears, destructive anger, inhibitions, poor concentration, forgetfulness, and infertility. Lose weight, stop smoking, and get rid of migraine and stress headaches forever. Restore sexual desire -- all without medications! Living life and enjoying it to its fullest is the realization of mental health and emotional well being. We can provide you with information, ideas, and choices to help you become the person you want to be, can be, and deserve to be.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?

Allied Mental Health Services opened its doors in 1985. Originally established as an alternative healing center for recovery from compulsive, addictive and dysfunctional behavior and drug abuse, AMHS successfully helped many people turn around their lives without costly hospitalizations or dependence on medications. As demand for services increased from people not needing intensive help, but wanting to improve the quality of their lives, new programs were introduced. The drug abuse component gave way to an expanded hypnotherapy and holistic healing emphasis.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
By far, the most gratifying part of this practice is seeing the positive changes so many of our clients make. Developing the practice to maximize effectiveness by constantly striving to improve the quality of clinical work and customer service are always at the top of our goals. Receiving feedback from clients that affirms our work is wonderful. At the same time, hearing from relatives and friends about some of the amazing changes of clients is always great news.

What we are known for and what separates us from the competition is the combination of psychotherapy with hypnotherapy, and sex therapy when needed. The intuitive approach we use to assist in identifying personal needs and problems, along with accessing the unconscious mind, quickly allow us to get to the heart of the matter and begin to focus on a healing solution.

We are not about simply treating people. We want to facilitate healing and new learning that can be used in all types of future situations. Our clients deserve to have all kinds of tools at their disposal so they can navigate through hard times while possessing all the confidence in their ability makes life work well.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
My favorite part is seeing the excitement on the faces of the clients when they "get it." The moment they realize the answers are within and they can do it becomes the magic that is my favorite part. Hearing from clients 6 months, a year, and 5 years later that they are still focused and using the skills they learned is heartwarming. Perhaps the biggest compliment is having former clients bringing their adult children and grandchildren to learn skills for solving the younger generation's concerns and issues. The level of confidence they have in us and the honor we hold in regards to them is very special.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
People need to see themselves in the future free of the problem. Engaging the imagination and creativity of the mind become a major initial step toward the path of healthy positive change.

Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?

Dr. Marty Lerman earned his masters and doctorate degrees in counseling from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. For more than 30 years he has provided mental health services as a counselor, therapist, college instructor, lecturer and consultant to businesses, hospitals and government agencies. He's owned his own successful private practice in the Houston area since 1985. Initially specializing in working with adolescents and families, he began seeing more and more of the parents change their concerns and problems apart from the children.

This led him to obtaining additional postdoctoral training in the areas of hypnotherapy and sex therapy. Dr. Lerman completed advanced training at the Ericksonian Institute for Hypnotherapy in Houston and at the Texas Institute for Hypnosis in Dallas. He is nationally board certified as a hypnotherapist, sex therapist and clinical supervisor, and medical psychotherapist.

Dr. Lerman is the proud father of four incredible children and grandfather of four.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
Once a month, on a weekend, we plan on hosting an event. Sometimes at no cost. The events will be a mix of seminars, workshops, and group discussions. CEU credits for mental health providers will be available for specific events.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
We do not submit claims out to insurance companies, therefore we are considered out-of-network. Clients who have insurance coverage for out-of-network Mental Health can file a detailed receipt given to them for any reimbursement.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
Our growing business involves teaching as many people as possible about the power of our minds. This includes working with individual, couples, and families in therapy; leading public seminars; writing articles; and teaching groups of people. We are so capable of reaching positive destinies, as long as we can negotiate through the negative influences. Improvement to us means reaching out and touching many more people.
