Interview with Mike Durr of Kingwood Mortgage Guy - Kingwood

As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Mike Durr, founder of Kingwood Mortgage Guys and the original Kingwood Mortgage Guy.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?

I specialize in offering residential financing on purchase and refinance loans. We do jumbo, FHA, VA, Cash Out and most other residential mortgage loans for those in Texas.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Since 1997, I have worked in the mortgage industry as a loan officer and branch manager and have lived with my wife and children in Kingwood since 1990.  When I started my own custom consulting business to focus on mortgage lending, I wanted to serve people by locating the best possible deal on their home or refinance. I’m always looking for reliable and reasonable lending options; in fact, I recently changed to Mortgage Solutions so that I can offer lower mortgage rates to my clients.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
I’m proud to work one-on-one with a customer on their journey to qualify for a home loan. For example, I just worked with a guy who had a credit trauma in his past and I was able to guide him on how to increase his credit score so he could get qualified.

If a client doesn’t get qualified for a loan, I work with them, reviewing their current debt and credit scores to create an action plan so they can get qualified in the future. The joy on the face of a client who gets qualified after a long journey is really gratifying.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
Having a teaching degree in education, I’ve always enjoyed coaching people.  I’m also a numbers guy; I love teaching someone about the mortgage process and consulting day-to-day with couples and individuals who are looking to buy or refinance real estate.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
A first time homebuyer who is looking for guidance in how the mortgage process works is my ideal client. My mission is to make the loan process simple, straightforward and fast for borrowers. I also offer some of the lowest rates nationwide.

Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
My branch is offering to help with the closing costs and offering a no down payment mortgage 203H FHA loan for those impacted by the Harvey floods.
