As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Dora Fredericks, owner of Luxor Galerie.Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
Our European-originated family initially built Luxor Galerie in South America over 35 years ago. We then relocated our antique and vintage decor, furniture and art gallery to Kingwood in 2016, sourcing items from all over the world and even from farms right here in Texas.
How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Having worked in retail for the last 10 years, I wanted my mom, Edith Deres, to relocate herself and her business to Kingwood. I’ve lived here for more than a decade with my family and I wanted to offer the community stylish handcrafted Italian furniture along with other unique items from around the world such as Latin American paintings, French tapestries, bronze statues, fine Chinese art and more … knowing that only my family could offer these finds to this community. Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
Known for having exquisite taste, our family has a passion about exploring the world and has an eye for locating quality and dependable décor, furniture and art. After transitioning a thriving business in South America to Kingwood, we are eager to show homeowners our distinct pieces and to continue to expand our item selections. What is your favorite part of running this business?
Being surrounded by pretty things, I love being in the store each day and seeing a customer become truly happy about finding a piece that speaks to them. It makes my day when my customer leaves our store delighted.
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Our ideal customers/clients are women who love to decorate and embellish their homes. Our clients enjoy stopping by our store often to see our changing eclectic selections and numerous antique and vintage collections. Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
Those who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey are being offered deep discounts at our store. We’re here to help those that need assistance. If you lost something in the flood, we can help get it back.
We also host group functions each month, including luncheons for a Latin American ladies group and for a group from Hungary. From October 12 - 22, we will be hosting a Winter holidays party for anyone in the community to view our newest furniture collection. Stop by, have some treats and browse our newest unique furniture finds.
Plus, we are offering a fall discount of 30% off until the end of October and an extra 10% off for seniors on Tuesdays. Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
After relocating to Kingwood with my husband who is in the oil business and seeing my two children graduate from high school here in Kingwood, I consider this livable forest my hometown. My children are now off on their own, with my daughter in Chicago working at an advertising agency and my son with his family at Camp Pendleton where he is serving as a marine. I wanted to re-build our family business here with my mom and share our eclectic European collections with a unique American touch.
Also, we are happy to help customers who have special requests for a rare item from another part of the world. It’s been amazing to see a client’s face light up when we’ve gotten them that one item that they couldn’t previously locate.
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
We have been blessed at how the Kingwood community has welcomed us and we are committed to helping homeowners find that one-of-a-kind showcase piece for their place for years to come.
