The damage done by Hurricane Harvey has been monumental for our community. The recovery will be long and difficult for many homeowners and businesses. In light of the hurricane's aftermath, FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center canceled its 7th annual Purple Ribbon luncheon held each year in October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"Canceling the luncheon was not an easy decision, especially since the income is part of the FamilyTime budget," said executive director Judy Cox. "But our community is hurting from the losses due to Harvey, including several of our board members and luncheon committee members, we believe it is the right decision. We appreciate all the work the committee and co-chairs Kathy Adkins and Linda Prator had already put into the planning and we are all committed to coming back bigger and better next year."

FamilyTime will still be holding its annual Hearts of Gold Gala scheduled for January 20 at the downtown Hyatt Regency honoring the 2017 Women of Achievement. Nominations for Women of Achievement are being accepted through October 17.

Gala chair Susan Meinholz said although it will be difficult, the show must go on. "With the canceling of the Purple Ribbon Luncheon and the expectation of donations being down the rest of the year we can't afford to cancel our largest fundraiser of the year," she said. "And, many people look forward to this great event. Several people have contacted me hoping we will not cancel and in the last few days I have received nominations for Women of Achievement."

FamilyTime's four facilities fared well from the storm, although some repairs are needed and some food and supplies need to be replenished.

"Our counseling center and thrift store were fine. Our shelter took in a little bit of water and the ceiling was damaged. We also lost some stored food and supplies, but we were thankful the staff and clients were able to stay safe,' said Cox. "Our counseling center in Dayton had some flooding but with the help of staff and volunteers we were able to re-open and service the community."

FamilyTime will use reserved funds to cover the costs of the repairs and clean up. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman's office held a food drive for the shelter and people have started to reach out to see where help is needed. "It's going to be difficult for all non-profits during the recovery of Harvey but we have such wonderful supporters and a great community we will be Okay."

FamilyTime is offering up to five free sessions of counseling for anyone affected by Hurricane Harvey. Call the office at 281-446-2615 to set up an appointment.
