The October Stroke Support Group meeting at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital will focus on the importance of exercise after stroke. The group will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Attendees can enter through the west entrance of the hospital, located off McKay Blvd., and proceed to Classroom B, where refreshments will be served.
Memorial Hermann Northeast personal trainer Jessica Labrada will conduct an exercise and fitness assessment and provide exercises to do at home for those who attend. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions.
Exercise can help reduce the risk of a second stroke by helping lower cholesterol levels; combat high blood pressure; control weight; and fight fatigue and depression, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). It can also help improve self-confidence and quality of life.
The Stroke Support Group is free and open to all stroke survivors as well as those who care for stroke survivors or anyone who would like additional information about surviving a stroke. Guest speakers present on requested topics by attendees of the group, light snacks are provided and the stroke support group committee members are always available to assist with questions anyone may have. Participants must register by calling 713.222.CARE (2273).
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious long-term disability in the United States, according to the AHA/ASA. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke annually.
Memorial Hermann Northeast is a certified Primary Stroke Center and is a "Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold-Plus" hospital, as designated by the AHA/ASA for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between when a patient arrives at the hospital and when they are treated. Memorial Hermann Northeast also received the Gold-Plus award for reducing the amount of time patients must stay in the hospital and reducing the patient's readmission rate.
