As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week Kingwood.com sits down with Bill Kayali of Houston Custom Carpets.
Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around? We feature floor coverings such as carpeting, hardwood and laminate, as well as porcelain and ceramic tile in addition to total remodeling of kitchens and baths or other rooms in the house that need attention. We also feature great lines of cabinetry and counter tops as well as hardware and accessories.
How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
Actually, it was quite by accident. Back in 1975, a friend of mine talked me into going to work for Color Tile...I started my business in 1988 after working in retail, distribution and finally manufacturing. I then decided that it was time to open my own business.
Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
We are proud to offer quite a selection of products in my store. With my extensive background, I am able to offer the finest products at extremely competitive prices because of my contacts in the business. When you're looking for great workmanship, great products at excellent prices, and someone who stands behind it all, you'll come see us.
What is your favorite part of running this business?
I would say, meeting people. I am a people person. I love to establish friendships with my customers, and am proud to say that I have acquired many friends from my years in the business.
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
For the most part we serve everyone in our community. However, it seems like most of our clients are professional people with lifelong careers and families.
Can you tell us something about yourself as the business owner? What is your background?
My education is in Business Management where my BS has given me a little help. My father was in the oil business and was working at Aramco in Saudi Arabia. That's where I was born. I lived there until I was 3, then we moved to Kuwait, where he worked at KOC, again, oil. Finally, Louisiana and southeastern Oklahoma where I went to college. Then I had a job transfer to Houston in 1973.
Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you'd like to mention?
We offer sales throughout the year, and have invitation only sales twice a year (March and September), where we arrange for exceptional financing and tremendous pricing concessions from our vendors.
Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
We are down home, friendly folks who will have your interest at heart. You can rest assured that you'll be treated fairly and amicably here and receive the treatment you deserve. As for products offered, the name "Custom" does not mean expensive, it means quality. We offer quality at the best possible price!
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
Our business has grown over the years to become what it is today. Our reputation speaks for itself. We plan on continuing our growth to better serve our clients.
