In addition to physicals, electrocardiogram (EKG) technicians from Memorial Hermann Northeast have administered nearly 1,000 EKG screenings to in-coming nine grade student-athletes at Summer Creek High School, C.E. King High School, Humble High School and their affiliated middle schools. The team has also provided EKG screenings at Riverwood and Creekwood middle schools.
The EKGs, which are used to detect problems with electrical activity in the heart, are read by a volunteer cardiologist from Memorial Hermann Northeast. Those requiring additional study are read by a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. To date, 14 EKGs have been referred for additional study.
The physicals are conducted by physicians affiliated with Memorial Hermann Northeast along with nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers and nursing students from Lone Star College-Kingwood. During a physician, student-athletes have their medical history reviewed; receive a physical exam that evaluates their blood pressure, vision, heart, lungs, abdomen, ear, nose and throat; and a musculoskeletal exam that evaluates posture, joints, strength and flexibility..

Questions about the physicals or other screenings should be directed to the student-athlete’s coach or to the school athletic trainer.
