Press Release:
Kingwood High School Project Graduation, an alcohol-free, drug-free, graduation “lock-in” party for the Class of 2015, will be held on May 24 & 25. The "lock-in " hours are from 11 p.m to 6 p.m. Graduating seniors will be treated to entertainment, activities, food and a raffle drawing for prizes.
The expense for Project Graduation is borne by students' families, alumni, and local businesses. Kingwood Air Repair donated $1,000 to the project. “We wanted to give back to the community, and helping the kids have fun at a celebration like this seemed like a good way to do that.”
Project Graduation originated in Maine in response to alcohol-related injuries and deaths resulting from teens driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. In the early 80s, John McKay, a TxDot employee, worked with the Maine Department of Education and Cultural Services Alcohol, Drugs, and Highway Safety Program Coordinator to adapt the program for Texas high schools. Two Texas schools piloted the program in the 1983-84 school year, and now, 20 years later, Project Graduation is a statewide program and an annual tradition at Kingwood High School.
