“It is my hope participants will walk away knowing a bit more about the history and efforts of African Americans and how their contributions have paved the way for current generations and generations to come,” said Kristen Wilkes, intercultural program coordinator at LSC-Kingwood. “Understanding cultures in a historical aspect can lead to a better understanding of where a culture stands in current day.”
In addition to working at TSU, Taylor is the author of two books and a third is currently in press. She serves on the board of the Association of African American Life and History, which is the black history organization founded by Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month. Taylor has been a part of documentaries, including the recent award-winning PBS documentary entitled, “Many Rivers to Cross.” She earned her degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University in African American History with an emphasis on Urban History and Race Relations.
“Here at LSC-Kingwood, we truly believe cultural competency is something every student should have before they depart our institution,” Wilkes said. “Celebrating Black History Month gives us another opportunity to expose our students to various cultures, specifically the rich history and culture of African Americans.”
The college will also host a Step Show on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Fitness Center. This free event will feature competitive performances from various high school groups.
