Members of Deerwood Baptist Church and Heritage Makers/Our Memories for Life Digital and Traditional Scrapbooking Products are busy preparing a basket for FamilyTime's annual Purple Ribbon Luncheon.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, FamilyTime Crisis & Counseling Center will hold its 4th Annual Purple Ribbon Luncheon on Friday, October 10, 2014, at Kingwood Country Club. The luncheon is also an opportunity to recognize women who have been honored as FamilyTime Women of Achievement from 1990 through 2013 and past members of The Key.

“FamilyTime’s mission is to reach out to women, men, and children in crisis situations and offer them the services they need, be it counseling, case management, assistance with legal matters, or shelter from an abusive situation,” said Judy Cox, Executive Director of FamilyTime. “The luncheon raises funds and awareness of this need in our community while also celebrating the many women who have made a difference in our community. These women serve as role models to our clients.”

“Our luncheon is becoming more popular year after year. This will be our third year to have a special guest speaker. Our hardworking and dedicated members of the Purple Ribbon Committee have collected many great donations for the silent auction and sponsorships are up this year” said Linda Prator, Luncheon Chair.

One of the highlights of the luncheon is the table-decorating contest. The theme for the decorations include items needed by the shelter, such as diapers, toys, toiletries, paper products, baby items, etc. “The guests are busy planning their own table decorations hoping to land the first, second, or third prize  which will be awarded for practicality and creativity,” added Prator.

“There were so many creative designs last year the judges had a hard time choosing the winners,” said Prator. “It’s a win/win for everyone. Guests have a good time creating their centerpieces and all the items they use are donated to the shelter.”

Individual tickets to the luncheon are $60. You can be a “Friend of FamilyTime” and reserve a table of 10 for $600. There are opportunities for sponsorships. Current sponsors include Minuteman Press, Flowers of Kingwood, Modern Home Renovation, Rep. Dan Huberty and wife Janet, Texan Drive Car Dealerships, Eunice Dennis and Halene Crossman. A silent auction featuring wonderful items and baskets and a wine pull will also be available. “There will also be an opportunity to cover the cost of various expenses at the shelter, like the cost of milk for two weeks, a pizza night for the kids and mortgage for a day,” added Prator.

“The Purple Ribbon Luncheon gets to the heart of what FamilyTime is all about,” said Susan Meinholz, Board President. “The staff and volunteers at FamilyTime help repair lives and give hope for a better future. Many families have been healed through the wide range of services FamilyTime provides.” FamilyTime’s contributions to the community last year were indeed considerable. The 24 hour crisis hotline answered 13,302 calls; 3,361 sessions of free counseling were provided to victims of abuse; 1,302 sessions of low cost counseling were provided to non-victims; and 789 victims of violence were provided with emergency shelter services.

“It’s important to come together at events like this and acknowledge that the instances of Domestic Violence are growing and are affecting lives everywhere including right here in our community,” said Meinholz.
