How Math and Kids Can Get Along

Mathnasium, a math tutoring center, can help solve more than math problems and instill confidence in children and adults.

“I hate math.”

This is a sentence often heard among kids and teenagers and sometimes even adults. Math is one of those subjects that is either understood and loved or is beyond comprehension and avoided. Any parent who has a son or daughter struggling in mathematics knows the worry it causes both the child and the parent. It seems that endless hours of math homework ruin many nights for both parties.

There is a solution to this problem—and to math problems—at Mathnasium, a math tutoring center located on Kingwood Drive and W. Lake Houston, easily accessible so that even the worst night of homework can be made right.

“The thing that cracks the biggest smile on my face is when parents come in and say ‘Oh, I wasn’t going to bring my child in tonight, but they just begged me until I gave in!’” said Imran, Education Director of the center. “That, and watching kids go from being frustrated and withdrawn to achieving beyond what they thought they could, and the confidence they gain from that increase in ability.”

This may seem too good to be true. Children begging to not miss a night of math tutoring? At Mathnasium, this is reality. One of Mathnasium’s sayings goes like this: “Children do not hate math, they hate being frustrated and confused by math.”

“So I would say to that child that what we do is whatever it takes to remove the pressure so they can just explore the way numbers work together,” an instructor explained. She revealed that when children are capable of manipulating numbers, math becomes fun. When they are overcome by frustration, however, and when the pressure is on, that’s when math becomes frustrating.

“We take the pressure away and make it more exploratory,” Imran said. “We have many different ways of teaching one topic and we find what way makes the most sense to each child.”

“Practice makes perfect,” said Emily Mouser, a Kingwood resident who has been working at the tutoring center since October. “Our programs here at Mathnasium have students go through numerous problems and repeat different techniques that we feel are effective to help them understand the material and by doing that they then improve significantly in their classes.”

The center is new to Kingwood but the franchise opened its first door 10 years ago and now has centers all over the U.S. and in 16 countries.

The Mathnasium Method uses sophisticated techniques to determine, with great accuracy, what a student knows and does not know. Next, the center director tailors a customized prescriptive learning program. Each student follows the program with the help of specially trained Mathnasium math tutors who provide instruction—and lots of warm encouragement. For proof of progress, instructors and parents rely on the student's report card, independent tests, and parent testimony to measure the speed and magnitude of improvement in math skills, numerical thinking, and attitude. In addition, students can bring homework and school material to the center for tutoring.
