BYU Folk Dance Ensemble ignites the stage with diverse cultural performance - Kingwood

Come feel the pulse of the world's cultures, from Irish hard shoe, American Appalachian clogging, exotic Indian dances and the Ukrainian Hopak brought together by Brigham Young University's (BYU) International Folk Dance Ensemble. BYU's critically acclaimed folk dance team showcases the world's cultures in their energetic, breathtaking presentation The Gathering at 7 p.m. on May 15 at the University of Houston Cullen Performance Hall.

The performance incorporates dance and music from Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Asian and North America into a show unlike anything audiences have ever seen. The ensemble's authentic costumes and precision routines leave every audience member breathless and anxious for more.

"The performance is a unique opportunity to experience the arts in an exciting, family-friendly way, from a wide variety of countries and cultures, and for a low price," said Summerwood resident Julianne Lewis. "I really can't find something as enriching for my children anywhere else! They are extremely excited to attend."

Julianne and Michael Lewis met as college students on the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble and danced with the team from 1999 to 2000. Michael now works for Exxon Mobile and Julianne owns a local dance studio and is a mother to their six children. They plan on bringing their older children to the performance.

Over the past decade, the Ensemble has visited more than 50 countries spanning four continents. As an emissary of the United States and American traditions, the group has become internationally famous at the most prestigious folk dance festivals abroad, where it performs with many of the world's finest dance companies.

Founded in 1956, the Ensemble boasts 40 musicians, singers, dancers and technicians who combine to form one of the most unique groups of performing artists in the U.S and are accompanied by the acoustic band, Mountain Strings. The International Folk Dance Ensemble and Mountain Strings originate in the Department of Dance and School of Music in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at BYU in Provo, Utah.
