The Kingwood Swimming and Diving Team kicked off their 2011-2012 season winning the annual Early Bird Invitational at Atascocita High School on Oct. 15-16. The competition was strong with more than 300 athletes participating from ten schools, including all of the Humble ISD high schools.

With the top 16 swimmers in each event scoring points, the Mustangs’ depth prevailed when the final scores were tallied: Kingwood girls, first (589 points); Cinco Ranch girls, second (467 points); Kingwood boys, first (528 points); Cypress Ranch boys, second (388 points).

Kingwood made a statement from the start by winning the 200 yard medley relays. The team of Lauren Day, Madeline Hazle, Leah Pfitzer and Cami Luhrs won for the girls and Owen Pink, Joey Dow, Jared Scheuer and Mark Bergmeister took first for the boys. The Kingwood boys continued to show their dominance in the relays, winning the 200 yard freestyle relay with Dow, Pink, Anthony Ishikawa and Bergmeister. The 400 yard freestyle relay proved the most exciting with a come-from-behind first place finish by the team of Fernando Saenz, Scott Barber, Reed Dalton and Ishikawa.

Three Mustang boys were first in individual events: Ishikawa (100 and 200 yard freestyle), Scheuer (100 yard backstroke) and Bergmeister (50 yard freestyle). The Kingwood boys battled in two of the closest races of the day, the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke, in which the top three finishers were less than half a second apart. Scheuer was second in the butterfly, followed by Dalton in third, and Dow was third in the breaststroke race.

For the girls, Pfitzer was second in two events: the 100 yard butterfly and the 50 yard freestyle in which freshman Lexi Lupton took third. Going the distance in the 500 yard freestyle were Meredith Ray, second place, and Amanda Day, third place. Also finishing in the top three in a girls’ individual event were Hazle (second, 100 yard freestyle), Lauren Day (second, 100 yard backstroke) and                                                 Emily Wattigney (second, 1 meter diving.)
