Cloth diapers - some may consider this as a thing of the past. However, for many local parents, this still is a very economical practice. So, in honor of Earth Day, several Kingwood residents brought their little ones to take part in the universal Great Cloth Diaper Change of 2011.

Created and promoted by the Real Diaper Industry Association (RDIA), Saturday, April 23, 2011, was deemed the day to set the world record of changing the most cloth diapers simultaneously around the globe. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness about the benefits of using cloth diapers.

Local event coordinator and Merry Go Round employee Liz Tims thought it would be a great idea for Merry Go Round customers to get involved.
“I know how important cloth diapers are to me. Using them is so economical and practical. Some may not be aware of the advantages of using cloth diapers, and what a better way to promote cloth diapers than to be a host site for the Great Cloth Diaper Change,” Tims expressed.

Twenty-eight parents, along with their children, joined in on this record-setting event held at Merry Go Round and Kids in Action. After registering at Merry Go Round, parents took their children next door to Kids in Actions for the big change. In order for the change to count toward the Guinness World Record, it had to begin precisely at 11:30 a.m., in addition to the minimum requirement of twenty-five participants.

As the whistle sounded, both moms and dads eagerly changed their child’s diapers. Within minutes, diapers were changed, babies were bouncing, and a contribution to the world record was set.

Parents were then invited back to Merry Go Round for a small reception with fun give-a-ways, such as stylish cloth diapers, baby calendars, and gift certificates. All walked away with goody bags filled with shirts, coupons, and samples galore.

Participant Karissa Wolfe thoroughly enjoyed the festivities. “I was really proud that my little girl and I were involved in setting a world record for something that is good for the environment and my baby’s body,” she said. “Modern cloth diapers are so different than they were a few years back, and I wanted to help get the word out.”

“I was very impressed by the turn out and positive feedback from this event,” Tims said. “Half of the participants weren’t even regulars of Merry Go Round, so it was good for them to get out and see what services are offered in the store.”
What started out as a campaign to get the word out about cloth diapers has transformed into something world-changing. At press time, over 175 host sites were registered, having over 5,600 participating from the United States all the way to Spain and Switzerland.
