Marivonne Essex, the "Red Headed Lawyer"
Marivonne Essex, known as the “Red Headed Lawyer,” is campaigning for voters to pay attention to the candidates this election year - not just for the political offices, but for the judicial elections, too.

“Our judges have a set of laws to follow,” states Essex, and continues by saying, “politics don’t enter into the equation. That’s a good reason to investigate all the candidates and make sure your vote counts.”

For instance, the Harris County District Clerk, Loren Jackson, has moved his district courts into the 21st century by utilizing much needed technological advances during his term. A lot of these changes are very obvious including “wifi” in the jury assembly room for those waiting to serve on jury duty.

Some other effective changes include lawyer’s having the ability to get verdicts online, downloading files, and receiving docket schedules or reschedules by email. The online site also encourages e-filing, which lists the filing fees. All of these changes have been very instrumental in decreasing drive times, phone “on-hold” times, and scheduling frustrations.

Building changes have included a new jury assembly room where four of the family courts have already been moved and all others have been approved for a future move. Anyone visiting the old building know they are old and not very convenient to navigate. The new building includes a cafeteria, “much needed” elevators, and lots of conveniences for those waiting for jury duty assignments.

And if you don’t think this affects you, the more Harris County uses technology in its legal processes, the more you (the taxpayer) save. Since there’s already talk about increasing the Harris County property tax rate, all voters should keep these types of activities in mind when casting their vote.

Essex knows first hand how tax dollars can often be wasted from inefficiency. She’s been in practice, as Essex Law Firm, P.C., specializing in family law since 1985. This means she has made many trips to the downtown court house and knows all to well the difference between a well run court system and one that is wasting lots of tax dollars in back logs and reschedules.
