"We are fortunate to have such generous supporters who want to assist our students in funding their tuition, fees, and books," said Darcy Mingoia, executive director of the foundation. "These scholarships will impact the lives of 458 students and change their lives forever."

The foundation's board members met on April 14 with financial aid directors and scholarship officers from Lone Star Colleges for the foundation's annual distribution meeting, where the funds are assigned.

Of the 458 scholarships, 361 scholarships were endowed and 97 were one-time special or annual scholarships.

Most of the endowed scholarships are designated by the donor for a specific college, Mingoia said, and the others, system, special or annual scholarships, are divided equally among the colleges.

"When a person supports the Lone Star College Foundation, he or she is supporting Lone Star College students, programs and faculty - this is what it's all about," said Mingoia.

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) Type 1 not-for-profit corporation that raises funds through its events, including the annual StarGala and the annual golf tournament, as well as through securing individual and corporate donations, major gifts, and grants.  This year's StarGala  is Saturday, April 24, and the golf tournament is held in the fall.

"These events enable the foundation to fund the education that changes the lives of students and to transform our community by providing an educated workforce," said Mingoia.

Each of the five Lone Star Colleges received varying levels of scholarships, based on the designation by the donors. LSC-CyFair received a total of $120,870 in scholarships, with 82 endowments, including a recent gift of 10 endowments from one donor. Other colleges were as follows: LSC-Kingwood, $131,200, with 53 endowments which included 20 endowments of $3,000 for "top 20" second-year students;  LSC-Montgomery, $73,000, with 43 endowments, not including a fall 2011 commitment of 13 additional endowments; LSC-North Harris, $109,700, with 20 foundation endowments and 51 Aldine Scholarship Foundation endowments; and LSC-Tomball, $49,700, with 26 endowments, and LSC-Tomball also receives an annual award of $10,000 from Tomball Regional Medical Center.
