Help raise money and awareness about heart disease and stroke by participating in the 5K Heart Walk. On-site registration for those who do not register in advance will begin at 8 a.m. and the walk   will begin at 9 a.m. The 5K or 3.1-mile course begins on the campus, travels down Kingwood Place to Northpark Drive and then returns to campus. Most walkers should complete the course in 30 to 45 minutes. Participants are encouraged to bring their cheering squad to give them support as they cross the finish line.

After the walk is over, the fun continues during the LSC-Kingwood Heart Fest. Live music, heart-healthy food, giveaways and interactive attractions are just a part of this annual community festival. Those choosing not to walk can enjoy the Heart Fest, which begins at the same time. There will be heart-healthy food, giveaways, interactive activities, live music, sponsor booths, and more. Everything at this fun-filled, family oriented event is free with an emphasis on heart and health.

This annual event is designed to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Associations research and education programs. The walk is part of the American Heart Associations Start program. The program encourages walking at home and work. Start calls upon Americans and employers to fight the sedentary life and adopt a healthier lifestyle through walking.

Those who raise $100 for the American Heart Association will get a Greater Lake Houston Heart Walk T-shirt. Those who raise $250 will get a Superstar ribbon to wear during the walk and will be invited to a special Superstar Breakfast the morning of the walk.

Employers and groups are encouraged to become sponsors and organize walking teams of any size. These activities help raise awareness and money to defeat a disease that devastates millions and kills more than 910,000 Americans each year.

Major sponsors of the event include Lone Star College-Kingwood, Memorial Hermann Northeast, Administaff, Embarq and Kingwood Medical Center. For more information, visit lonestar.edu/heart-fest or call John Turner at 281.312.1795 or email John.A.Turner@LoneStar.edu.

Register for fall credit classes (Aug. 24-Dec. 13) in one of three ways: phone, online or on campus.  Classes are offered days, evenings, or weekends in traditional, Internet, video, TV and independent study formats. Current students can register by telephone at 281-519-6625. Former and current students can register online at LoneStar.edu/registration.
