A dictionary is perhaps the first and most powerful reference tool that a child should own. Its usefulness goes beyond the spellings, pronunciations and definitions it lists. It is also a companion for solving problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing, and creative thinking abilities. Students benefit from an increased self-reliance and resourcefulness inspired by the maxim, “look it up.” The importance of using a dictionary to make sure all words are spelled correctly is emphasized. This is an opportunity for children to expand their vocabulary.

Thanks to the Humble Intercontinental Rotary Club and the Kingwood Area Republican Women’s Club, each third grade student at Humble Elementary, Lakeland Elementary, North Belt Elementary, Jack Fields Elementary, Park Lakes Elementary, and River Pines Elementary will receive their own dictionary to use in school and to take home at the end of the year.  Representatives from both organizations recently visited the Humble ISD Administration building to place a plaque inside of each dictionary to let each of these students know who made the donation.

This wonderful donation will assist students to complete the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.  This donation would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the people who have made a personal commitment to improving literacy and the quality of life in their community.  Humble ISD thanks the special people from the Humble Intercontinental Rotary Club and the Kingwood Area Republican Women Club!

It seems only fitting to allow one of Humble ISD third grade teacher to have the last word, so here is one of her favorite anecdotes: “When a teacher asked a third grade girl to define the word ‘humility,' she hesitated a minute and then replied, ‘It's when you're real smart like I am but you don't go around telling everybody.'
