Of the 2.26 million CenterPoint Energy customers, 73 percent are still without power, according to the company.

Officials said customers in the southern and eastern parts of the CenterPoint service area were hit the hardest by Hurricane Ike.

CenterPoint Energy crews are working around the clock in two 16-hour shifts. Also, 7,000 additional linemen from around the country are assisting in the restoration process.

CenterPoint's 5,000 square-mile electric service territory suffered widespread damage as a result of Ike's 100 mph winds, officials said.

Customers do not need to report their individual outages because CenterPoint's automated system provides that information.
