It’s not too late to sign up for the innovative array of week-long education camps offered by Lone Star College-Kingwood this summer for youth ages 7–14. Weekly camps run through the end of July and registration is ongoing.

Kingwood’s own “Discovery College” gives students an opportunity to enhance existing talents or develop new ones through a variety of classes that encourage hands-on participation in age-appropriate groups. Concepts of math, science, art, reading, and computer technology are taught in a project-oriented way that makes learning not just fun, but irresistible. More than 40 different courses are offered in academic prep; art and creativity; arts and communication; dance, fitness, and sports; engineering, science and technology. A complete list of classes can be found online at kingwoodcollege.com/ce/ce.htm.

Selections include:

  • Dragster Racing – Experience the science of speed. Each student will design, build and race a model dragster. The fun starts with creating a design then painting and assembling your own model dragster. Get ready for the race of your life on the final day of class! Take home your own dragster, book and keepsake storage box. Ages 10-14.
  • Little Dribblers – Come join the fun as we learn basketball skills through games and fun. Instruction will be given on basic basketball rules and skills. Wear comfortable athletic shorts and tennis shoes. Ages 7-9.
  • Physically Fit Kids – Do you need a little more action during the summer than watching TV? Through this fun mix of kickboxing, Pilates, yoga, and athletic conditioning, you will increase coordination and agility, build endurance and strength, and learn how to relax through movement and breathing techniques. Ages 10-14.
  • Funbots – Grouped in teams, students will program, design, and build Lego Mindstorms robots including a car, bug, catapult and house. No experience is required. Ages 10-14.
  • Plays from the Stage – Enter the stage and explore drama. You’ll learn elements such as scene design, costume, design, makeup design, playwriting, characterization, stage movement, dance and performance. The last day of this two-week experience will culminate in an outdoor stage performance with all parents invited. Ages 11-14.
  • It’s Just Rocket Science – Investigate the science of flight by creating a hot-air balloon and model rocket. Students will be introduced to the principles of lighter-than-air flight, as well as the concepts of buoyancy when they create their very own hot-air balloon. Later, buckle your seat belts as you design, build and launch your own model rocket. Ages 11-14.

Classes are offered Monday through Thursday and change weekly. Morning camps will be held 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and afternoon camps will be held 1–5 p.m. Students may attend a morning session, an afternoon session, or both. Those attending an all day camp will need to bring a sack lunch or buy a lunch ticket. A 16-hour course is $85 and includes materials. Shorter-length courses range in price between $40 - $65.
