Another business is opening this week in Main Street Kingwood (new HEB plaza), and this is for those of you who have a sweet tooth, or if you’re a chemistry buff..Either way, a big KDC welcome to SUB ZERO Nitrogen Ice Cream.

SUB ZERO is much cooler than your average ice cream parlor…literally and figuratively! And if you’re interested in theatrics, you are in for an extra treat because these frozen scoops of deliciousness are made right in front of you with a process that is nothing short of fascinating!

After you're greeted by the super-nice staff (and the giant liquid nitrogen tank) when you walk in, it's on to the fun stuff. First, you pick your desired ice cream flavor and add-ins at the counter, of which there are quite a few to choose from. The ingredients are then poured into a mixing bowl by a SUB ZERO ice-cream maestro. He presses a foot pedal to add steady amounts of liquid nitrogen coming out at -320 degrees, which makes a hissing sound and releases these rolling white clouds that billow out across the counter. He stirs and spins the mixture a bit, and voila…the ingredients have rapidly turned into a creamy treat for you to enjoy. It’s incredible, to be honest.

This particular location of SUB ZERO was started by the Edwards family, locals who had been looking into opening their own business for a while. I asked them about why SUB ZERO ended up being their choice. “The science and coolness (pun intended) of it is what drew me to this particular franchise,” said Shane Edwards. “Chemistry has always been interesting to me, and come on…who doesn’t love ice cream?!”

It actually wasn’t as easy as that either...There is a little bit more to the story. Originally, they had set their sights on a Jimmy John’s franchise location. However, JJ requires quite a few years of experience in the restaurant biz, which none the Edwards possessed. Down, but not out, the family kept looking into other options. Then one of Shane’s sisters saw an episode of Shark Tank about a crazy new ice cream place called SUB ZERO. The family was excited about it, and after a little bit of research, their minds were made up. And SUB ZERO - Kingwood was on its way. I guess everything happens for a reason.

SUB ZERO - Kingwood will be open every day from 11 - 11, starting this Friday, 4/14/17.

4521 Kingwood Drive Suite 230
281 570 4399

By the way, the little sister is the best ice-cream maker of the bunch. So if you get the chance, ask for her.

Sounds cool. But why is the guy not wearing gloves for safety and sanitary reasons?

I've been to the Sub Zero in Beaumont a few times and from what they told me was its a safety hazard for the employees to wear gloves. The liquid nitrogen turns to a gas instantly and if the liquid nitrogen got stuck inside of a glove, it would burn the employees hands. Without gloves it rolls off your hands and will not burn you. While they're making your ice cream the smoke comes out from under the counter and all the kids loved to play in it and its completely safe.

Plus they have never touched my ice cream while making it and its really really good ice cream! We will definitely be regular customers now that one is close to home!

@salmonlover: Preferably locally owned. National chains get old quickly. Too much same-old-same-old.

Preferably locally owned.

@donnatella: The more Kingwood becomes like Spring, the less likely that is to happen.

It looks like fun. I know my kids will love it.

That being said, I know the owners will look at this thread so here's advice- 65-75% of all traffic on a website comes from mobile devices. Your desktop version is nice but web stinks and is hard to navigate.
