Early mornings out on Lake Houston offer a view of beautiful sunrises, sounds of fishing lines zipping through the air, the feel of the water as it splashes up against the edge of the dock…and on most days, you’ll also catch members of the Lake Houston Rowing teams pulling their way across the waves, working towards their next regatta prize. [First off, shoutout to @HollyHobby for alerting me to the fact that Kingwood kids had their own rowing team.  Emoticon ~C]The club is spearheaded by rowing guru and coach Daniel Udeanu. He has an awesome philosophy - EVERYBODY CAN ROW! There’s absolutely no experience or fitness level required. The programs offered right now include: Home-Schoolers, High-Schoolers and Adults. The next regatta is the Space City Sprints race coming up this weekend (4/8/17) down in Clear Lake if you’d like to cheer on the home teams. For info on the race, visit:http://www.barchouston.org/regattas/scs/There will be more regattas over the next couple months, including the Texas Championships in a couple weeks. Their schedule can be seen here if you’d like to follow along:http://www.lakehoustonrowing.com/regattas/To be honest, I was uber-impressed with the group that was practicing when I went out there the other day. They were flat out getting after it across the water, and they really seemed to enjoy it…Pushing themselves and each other. And besides being a great workout, I was reminded by a parent that there is a vast opportunity for them come scholarship time. If you’re wanting to check it out for yourself (even if you’re not sure if rowing is for you), there are FREE introductory sessions held every Saturday at 8 am (weather permitting). Just contact Coach ahead of time to set it up.  (201)803-7454 or LakeHoustonRowing@gmail.com For more information or if you have any questions, please go to their Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/Lake-Houston-Rowing-452178031529158/Go get ‘em this season, kids...We’re cheering for you!  Emoticon   4951

To really  understand what a great sport rowing is, you need to go to a regatta! The excitement of watching these racing boats is really thrilling but the entire event is very relaxed. If you're interested in racing or just want to see a regatta in person, you're invited.  Emoticon Our Lake Houston team will have bright blue canopies and we'll be easy to spot.Bring comfy chairs, water, a picnic lunch, and enjoy a beautiful day by the lake. Races begin at 7:20 a.m. and continue until about noon.To get to the regatta, drive south of Houston on I-45 to the NASA Road Bypass. Follow the Bypass to NASA Road 1 and head east for ~2 miles to Clear Lake Park. Turn left at the park entrance and drive around the park road until you see Mud Lake. Look for lots of long, skinny boats.  4951

Rowing is one of the easiest ways for students to get a sport scholarship. Four years ago we looked into this class for our son. The instructor asked us to meet him out at the lake early morning. We arrived and he brushed us off. We rescheduled and he brushed us off again. We rescheduled again and he refused to take our son out on the water for his free observation ride. We rescheduled again and the weather was bad. We finally got the hint that our son was not welcome to join the program because of his weight. "I'm only thirteen and I have already experienced discrimination." Our community is elite, but our community member have more class then to exhibit elitist behavior. The instructor needs to learn some class. 4951

We just returned from a regatta in Clear Lake, and every one of our boats medaled! It was a fun day in the sun. 4951

Here's one of our girls teams at a regatta last fall. I love how the oars are very nearly perfectly in sync.

I'm sure they would turn down almost anyone that is not lean with good muscle mass. I do not see a problem. I always wanted to be on the USMC Silent Drill team. I was too short. That is life. Effin deal with it. 4951

@beastmode: Actually, we have had all kinds of sizes and shapes on the team. Autistic kids, physical handicaps, etc. At the most elite levels, rowers need to be tall, and there are minimum height requirements. At our level, though, coach works with whoever he has.

Maybe this pic will work. Posting it from my phone.
