A Kingwood 7th-grade football player's future mobility still hangs in the balance after a car hit him on his bike on Super Bowl Sunday.

Seth Haynes was riding his bicycle home from a friend's house on a small stretch of W Lake Houston Parkway on Sunday, February 5, around 6PM, near the intersection of Sycamore Springs Dr, when he was hit from behind by an SUV. HFD and HPD responded to the scene, and the 12-year-old was rushed to Children’s Memorial Hermann Trauma Center in the Houston Medical Center. Seth spent a week in ICU and then an additional week and a half recovering medically. His injuries included multiple fractures, a broken and dislocated pelvis, his lungs had filled with blood requiring chest tubes and intubation, and he had a severed spinal cord. Remarkably, he had no trauma to his head.

The driver that hit Seth was issued citations for Failure to Yield and No Insurance.

Ultimately, Seth's spinal injury means that he will not have the ability to walk in the foreseeable future. Seth and his family eventually traveled to Shriners Hospital for Children, in Chicago. It is a pediatric facility specializing in spinal cord injuries and rehabilitation. He will spend weeks (possibly months) there in order to recover and learn how to adapt to the consequences of the injuries.

Seth has slowly begun the healing and rehabilitation process. Rehab has come to a halt recently because of a Gastro-Intestinal problem caused by the paralysis. This week, they will be taking more x-rays and visiting with a GI doctor to hopefully get his stomach to start working properly again. This will allow him to possibly get rehab going soon.

As of right now, it is uncertain when Seth will be able to return to Kingwood and to his family & friends...Or what condition he will be in once he gets here. But I do know there are a lot of eager people waiting to see him. We wish you the best, Seth. Get well soon, be strong, and take that rehab one step at a time, kid.

The family would like to sincerely thank all of the many people who have reached out, prayed, donated, cooked, messaged, helped and supported them daily through this time. The incident was discussed and Seth was honored with green and white ribbons at the recent town hall meeting with Mayor Turner in attendance. Friends of the family started a Go Fund Me page where donations and support are being directed...as well as "Seth Strong" shirts:

*Tentative future events include a benefit at Big Horse Ranch of East Texas where Seth regularly takes horseback riding lessons, and a fundraiser offered by Kingwood Chick-Fil-A to celebrate and welcome Seth home.

@sweetie:

Yeah, it was bad. I had a lot of his friends send the GFM link to our Facebook page a couple days after the accident. A LOT of them sent it. Enough to where I felt obligated to reach out to the family. However, I wasn't going to run a story on him without asking the parents first. I sent the mom a PM telling her to reach out [ONLY] if and when she was up to it. She replied immediately, was very appreciative of us waiting, and said they would get back to me after things settled down. They eventually got heir bearings and responded.

@Ebola: I am sorry this accident happened to such beautiful kid, and we are praying for a speedy recovery for Seth. But, I cannot help get po at the driver who hit this child. WTH was she or he doing that couldn't see him? And what kind of punishment the irresponsible driver will receive by the law? [The driver that hit Seth was issued citations for Failure to Yield and No Insurance?]

Seth, stay strong and know that your friends and neighbors are praying for you.  Medical science is making huge strides everyday so be positive and push forward.  I can tell by that picture that you are not only handsome but a tough guy that knows how to conquer obstacles!
I can't wait to hear about the big celebration upon your homecoming!

PS:  Anyone have an address or PO box that cards can be sent to?

Heartbreaking. Much can be accomplished with the mind intact. And all can be accomplished with prayers. 🙏🏻
Ditto the address request!

What a horrible accident! Prayers for a complete recovery. Take it one day at a time. Doctors don't know everything, because they can never factor in the power of God, through prayer.
